Converted truck, racetruck, seven with turbo
Discussion
Hi guys
hope you're all looking forward to the summer, I am :-)
I have this (is it crazy) idea that I want to buy a lorry 7.5-18 ton and convert it into a racetruck to go around the country with a sevenstyle car racing whereever I can.
Been looking into the market for racetruck's seems like the "best bet" is to find at horsebox truck and take the rails out in the back, they usually come with stalls for 3-4 horses, most come with "some sort of living accommodation" in them, at least to have a hot coffee and maybe a nap.
anyone have a better idea?
I might consider er seven style car with a cosworth turbo, anyone have any comments??

It has plenty of room for a fold up bed. 25 to the gallon at least. But I do like your idea of the big tonka toy lorry, I always fancied a big truck.

just for this! :-) Looks I will be shopping this weekend, any input appreciated!
Hoseboxes hold their money too well as the horsey set don't tend to be short of it (sweeping generalisation I know).
Incorrigible has built a decent affair out of an old prison truck. Daf chassis, side entrance door and fully insulated to start and a decent separate electric supply to the rear.
The basic trucks are so much cheaper because they're too low for comfort for a horse, plenty for us humans though.

Beware of the 7,5 tonne route if you are a business.pilotea said:
As a business you have to have an Operators Licence. To get one your Transport Manager has to apply for it. You can't be the Transport Manager yourself unless you are a member of something like the road haulage association and have qualifications in transport management blah, blah, blah.
As a private owner I believe you just need a 7.5 tonne licence. You may also have to run a tachograph.
We bought a truck but finally had to give in after many months of trying to sort getting it on the road.

1: An operators license
2: Tachograph
3: You're not restricted to driver hours regulations
that even applies if you're driving a 44 ton artic (as a private vehicle), so you're correct. 7.5 ton trucks are very cheap and easy to convert into a rolling garage. Another thing that might be a good idea is to tow a caravan after it, then the "accommodation part" is sorted. You need a C1+e or C+E (that will be soon).
You can even drive a 72 seater bus without and PCV (but C is required as it's above 7.5 ton) unless its a commercial operation. Learnt a lot about those rules the last couple of weeks...

So can I buy a great big artic tractor unit and drive it on my car licence?
I think Chris Ewebanks did.
Yes you can but you need to remove the 5th wheel.I think Chris Ewebanks did.
I used to drive a 27 ton Thorneycroft Antar with a 73 ton trailer all on a car licence because it was registered as plant.

He has a cat C license, but because he never passed the C+E he has to drive (as his truck is a tractor) with a plug so he can't put a trailer on it.I think Chris Ewebanks did.
You need a C+E license for a tractor
