Diff seals

After removing the rear discs on my 400SE, can the diff seals be replaced from outside or only when refurbing the diff.

You can replace them but you have to be careful when assembling:

Thanks for the reply. Its the drive-shaft seals that want doing. The link you sent talks about adjusting backlash on the prop side. Or am I missing something?

No you aren't missing anything - just assumed it was the prop

IMO the diff should be dropped, it may be awkward at first but there is so much you can do once it's off including a full rebuild if you have to send it away assuming you cannot do the work yourself.
