X5 and X6 re sale............?
Discussion
I'm currently in the Market for a 4x4
It's a toss up between a range rover sport, an X5 or an X6.
We all know residuals on the RRs are strong, but if I sank £35k into an X5 or X6 which would be better?
What are the options to get in the X range? There seems to be plenty about for my money. The RRS I am considering also is the HST TDV8.
Any help appreciated as always!
Cheers

I would find a way to buy an X6 35i with a sunroof and decent spec.
You wont find a used one anywhere. The reason?
Once the car hits 10 months old it can be exported to the far east where
there is a strict quota and tax on new cars.
If you buy a new X6 35i in white, 20" alloys, sunroof and dynamic pack
for say £50K after discount, you will get around £58K for it second hand
in 10 months. Just stick an add in Pistonheads and watch the brokers hound you
into an auction....
NOW TELL ME THAT THE X6 WILL DROP LIKE A STONE BABY!

British Car Auctions revealed that two two-year-old BMW X6s had sold for over £58,000 - £3,000 more than the list price of a new one.
Both had covered 20,000 miles and a Parker's valuation for an X6 with that mileage tells us that the cars were not worth much more than £35,000 - the new owners had paid £23,000 over the odds.
BCA's National Account Manager Simon Young said: "These BMW sales always attract a huge amount of attention from buyers and regularly achieve strong market values on the cars offered.

Ok - not arguing - just passing on comment from a mate - was told the stealers are discounting heavily on both the x6 (why buy when the x5 does the same thing and more useful day to day) and the 5gt (no one's buying them at all) so they expect rsiduals to fall heavily too - of course that won't be allowed within the dealer network.
Unfortuantely not in the market for a 50-60k car at the moment
Does thar theory about middle east apply to most luxury 4x4's? So if we bought dubai spec white with tan leather RR's for instance do you think you'd get the same sort of returns? That could be a good alternative to the office job!

It is true mate. The story is on the net if you search for it.
Its not a publicity stunt for BCA honest!
You need to understand whats going on in the Far East to understand it.
The tax on new cars produced outside of the native country is over 100%.
Thats why many manafacturers are building factory's over there.
In Malaysia for example an X6 35i lists at just over £100,000. Here it is
£52K.
There is no market for diesel in any of these country's so they only want
large petrol engines. Once the car is over 10 months old the tax laws are
greatly reduced, so thats what the brokers are searching for.
There are several exporters in the UK sourcing these cars. You try and find
a petrol X5 or X6 new shape for sale second hand in the UK right now.
I know all this because I am a Sales Manager for BMW, and recently I took
in an X6 35i a year old. I had several brokers bidding me more and more.
I marked the car up for £42995 in line with the guides. I paid £38000 for it.
In the end we took £48000 and if I knew then what I know now, I could have held
out for even more.
As for the deals on new X5 and X6 today - there is a free media pack offer from
BMW, so add that to a dealers typical discount and you can get about £7000 off of
a £52K list price. A year ago there was £5000 support from BMW as they were concerned
the market was stalling. They are not so worried now.
As for the 5GT.....correct, its the elephant in the room. We never wanted it, but Germany
built it anyway, There is no market for this car and its not being accepted by the chauffeur
market which was the plan....the car drives well, but its as big as a bus and about as pretty.
It needs to dissapear from the price lists fast...
The good news car this month is the new X3. Every dealer has taken 5 months worth of orders
at pretty much list price -

Weird and wonderful far east stories aside, and lets face it, the majority of these cars will not be sold on for a profit to some foreign buyer.
I would go for derv without a doubt, have a look at old X5's in the classifieds, the 4.4 petrols are usually the cheapest examples! Additionally, I'd probably discount the X6 because its pretty marmite and I don't think people will be falling over themselves to own one in the future. You're going to suffer depn either way, but I'd go diesel X5 or RR.

A subtle change of any of the laws could leave you with a very, very big, white (literally!) elephant though. The tax on new cars produced outside of the native country is over 100%.
