I recently bought a second hand dishwasher off a guy I used to work with. I knew it was about three years old but it was a Bosch, which I've always been told were pretty good, plus the guy said it worked perfectly well, which I suppose in a way it does...

After a couple of months, most of the items coming out of it after it's been on are covered in crap that doesn't resemble any sort of crap that went in there to begin with!! It's a kind of sandy black stuff, it's in small patches and it is an absolute nightmare to get off - nothing short of a brillo pad works to remove it.

Anyone have any experience of a similar thing or any advice on what could be causing it? The salt is as topped up as it looks like it needs to be, we use a branded washing tablet and have tried 7 or 8 different types of the rinse aid stuff.

Put a dose of washing up liquid in it!
This will degrease it no problem wink

I'm sure you've tried it but make sure the food trap/filter thing is empty (in fact remove it and check behind it as far as your fingers will reach(power off!!!eek)

Mine has a knob inside which you change if you use tablet things or powder - if it's on the wrong one it won't clean as effectively.

Other than that I havn't a cluerotate

I take it the food trap is the kind of sieve thing in the bottom that pulls out? I emptied this out the other day and there was barely owt in there, but I didn't try sticking my fingers in there!!

We've tried powder, tablets and liquid and haven't changed any settings and they all came out the same. frown

It's got salt in?

Obvious but worth checking.

I also have a bosch. You can get these deposits for a number of reasons IME.

Firstly you should find you can adjust it for water hardness. I found if its set for hard water (we have soft) it leaves gritty deposits for some reason. It shouldnt but it does.

What you are describing is most likely to be either a blocked filter (they are easy to remove and clean) or its not draining properly. Check that the drain hose is correctly positioned and that water is flowing freely from it.

You can also get deposits if one of the water jets is blocked and the dirty water isnt cleaned away. On my Bosch the arms just unclip and I usually need to clean them out every year as the water jets get gummed up.

ANd finally you can get this effect if the arms that spray the water cant rotate freely. If something is sticking out under the basket (handle of a saucpan for example) it wont sping and will also leave a bit of a mess behind. Mine beeps and lets me know if the arms are blocked , but not all dishwashers do that.

I've put about a kilo (very roughly) in but as it was second hand, there were no instructions or guidelines to say how much it should take and I can't find any on t'internet. There's also a salt indicator light on the front and that hasn't flashed up so I presume it's enough?!!

Brilliant advice, cheers. I'll try them tonight and see if it works smile

Thanks guys.

Also certain things (like dishes containing potato or anything 'burnt on') are best soaked and cleaned by hand rather than in the dishwasher.

They'll cover everything else in crap.

Sounds like a good opportunity to find out whether dishwasher cleaner works. It comes in little bottles that go in the cutlery basket, then you run the machine empty and it does its stuff.

It's only a couple of quid from the supermarket; I recently bought some, but unfortunately my enthusiasm for cleaning dishwashers evaporated the moment I came in the door and it now languishes in the cupboard under the sink.

We did this and all it succeeded in was making my dinner plates smell of lemons. Not bad when eating something containing lemon, but citrus flavoured pasta carbonara is rather unpleasant!

We had a new top of the range Bosch that did this. The engineer came out 8-10 times during a year, couldn't fix it, gave us spiel about it being because newer machines use less water, changed it for another one with the same issue, and eventually ended up getting our money back and getting an AEG.

That's only had a fit once (they all do sometimes if you put something mushy in - it was a bowl of soup for me).

Sorry!

+1

Also, after cleaning out the filter we always take off the spinning arms and run water through it from the tap (sometimes using a cocktail stick to make sure all of the jets are clear) and this generally has done the trick smile

We had a bosch dishwasher same thing happened.
Cleaned everything but issue still there.

Did a bit of reserach. There is a plastic manifold at the side of the machine (You have to take a side cover off ours was on the left hand looking from front of the machine) that allows the fresh water in and dirty water out. This gets cruded up and needs a good clean out.
After a good clean the machine cleaned as good as new

Hope that helps
