Hi guys,

A mkV golf r32 drove past me today at a decent speed, it sounded rather glorious! Sort of like a hollow howl from the exhaust! It got me thinking a little bit - Do V6 exhaust notes generally sound better than a straight six? Or is the sound mainly down to the design of the exhaust?

I currently have a 2.5i Z4, I think the standard exhaust is pretty muted, bassy at low revs then then pretty inaudible as the revs rise. The BMW straight sixes I've heard seem to be more about the induction note (ala the M3 CSL).

I've seen quite a few BMW's with aftermarket exhausts on YouTube and none of them sounded particularly 'glorious' to me, admittedly though you don't really get a true picture of the sound on a video.

in my experience it is possible to get the bimmer 6 to snarl nicely, however having also owned a VAG group 6-cylinder I can testify to them sounding incredible when unleashed.

Out of interest im driving a Z4 Coupe 3.0si and considering exhausts atm as well. Although I am very aware I dont want to spoil the all round useability of the car......

cheers

I wouldn't mind a nice sound exhaust as long as it wasn't too loud/droney when cruising. Have you removed any of the foam from your sound generator Browner?

no haven't touched it. Only had it 3 weeks, absolutely love it. The ride's not bad at all, tho I had a cooper s works before so anything will ride like a Jag after that....

The steering wheel is ludicrously thick mind!

needs a rear LSD tho.......defo on the list

Just incase you aren't aware of what the sound generator mod is there's some info here...

Its mainly the way the exhaust is baffled in the R32's.

Same with the Astra VXR numberg ring Remus exhaust.

both pretty tastey sounding though!
