Not mine but a friend's (who lives in the Isle of Man so I'm mostly diagnosing at a distance here).
Problems started after the car was stood for a week or so over Christmas - it seems to have developed a hesitation that feels almost like a really quick fuel cutoff. Only seems to do it under load as it seems to rev freely in neutral and FWIW it seems to have appropriate levels of power otherwise. I have driven the car and I would say that it's definately worse in 3rd/4th (I've only seen it happen once in 2nd) and seems to get worse when the car is low on fuel. When I took it out at the weekend fuel was pretty low (range counter said 80miles) and it was fairly bad, wondering if there was something wrong with the fuel in there (the last fill had come from a garage with something of a dodgy reputation locally) I stuck £25 of super unleaded and gave it a good run for 20-25 miles, it felt better as soon as I put the super in and seemed to improve as I drove it. The problem didn't dissappear entirely though.
Spoke with my friend last night however and as the fuel has run down the problem has come back with a vengance, apparantly last night it was hunting at idle as well and the EML is now on, my friend stuck a tenner of regular unleaded in and said that improved instantly (but not completely) but that the EML hasn't cleared.

The car has done 68k and doesn't have a particularly hard life - short runs 4 days a week and then a longer run three times a week.

Could be an MAF / MAP sensor as they fail a lot, best thing is plug the OBD in and tell us what the number is then we have more idea. Could be a blocked injector, though the list of what it could be is just a guess. Could even be plugs...

Get the diagnosis done

Spoke with my friend at lunch and told her to get the OBD read, told her its worth seeing if her local indie can plug in before she goes to MINI and payes them a small fortune to connect a cable smile
