Now then now then. I'm in the market for a new AV receiver to replace a 10 year old Technics surround amp.

Pretty much made my mind up on an Onkyo, has anyone out there dug into the merits of the TX-NR708 and TX-NR808?

As far as I can see the 808 has slightly more power and an extra HDMI output which I don't really need, 100WPC is enough to drive the Mission bookshelfs. Is the sound quality on the 808 better than the 708 or am I better off saving £200 and going for the 708? They both have the same DAC and video upscaling processor.

I'll mostly be using it for music (flac format) streamed through the home network and films (1080p x264 mkvs + blu-ray). Connected to a Sony Bravia 40", PC, Sony blu-ray and the Wii.

So, Onkyo fans, is the 808 worth the extra over the 708?

If you're sure you'll never have both projector and tv then probably not...

I tried the 808 - I needed the extra hdmi out as my matrix and amp went kaput pre-xmas.

I ended up buying the Yamaha RX-V767 which has the extra HDMI and I actually prefered the sound, I've previously been an Onkyo fan but found that the Yammy had pretty much eveything and was £300 cheaper.

Thanks folks. Pretty certain I won't be using a projector before the next upgrade.

Pretty much settled on the 708 now. The selling point would have been the bi-directional remote control on the 808 but hearing that the 708 complies with standards for using other remotes I'm pretty much sold on the 708.

So ... I went to Richer Sounds as they price match with the internet, called in Saturday before closing, no 708 but they had the 808 in stock. Sunday morning, my wallet was burning a hole in my pocket so I thought what the heck, I'll go for the 808, rang the store at opening time to check they hadn't sold it and they said the 708 was in stock and the 808 wasn't! Off I went on the 50 mile round trip to the nearest store only to find when I get there they had neither in stock!

I know retail wages are low but surely their peanuts can pay for a monkey that can read. You'd think. Sunday morning wasted, email to customer services saying I should have gone straight to the internet rather than supporting local stores and spending my fuel and Sunday mornings because of the incompetence of their staff.

Doubt it was the monkey from the stock room, he'd have known what they've got in stock and what they haven't. It was more like the lad that makes the coffee for the bloke that makes the tea.

Still, their offer of vouchers might tempt me back in the store. If it wasn't for that offer I'd be on the net already ... although a refubed Onkyo 3007 online for <1/2 price is very tempting, perhaps overkill for my room and speakers but it would be nice
