Anyone else had a door fall off ??

Knew I was having too much fun... Three months into Griff ownership, and have so far had nothing but a big stupid grin on my face until today. Pulled out of the petrol station, 20 yards down the road I hear a disconcerting loud metallic clonk.
Pull over to check all is ok, release door catch and as I open the door it not only swings out but also down with a scraping GRP noise. I quickly pull shut and thankfully it pulls back into place and closes properly. Call Fernies to check warranty only to be told doors falling off is not covered by the warranty! To their credit they have told me to bring the car in & they'll see what they can do....
Not impressed though - wasn't expecting bank vault build quality, but large parts of bodywork trying to just fall off ??

I had exactly the same happen to me this Saturday!
You will need to remove the speaker to gain access and
you should find the top mounting bolt in the base of the door, if not hanging in the top door mount.
I found the best way to do the job was to close the door (so its held nicely in position) and locate the bolt and tighten initially with a 17mm socket by hand to start, then a spanner. I found a ratchet spanner invaluable here as access is at a premium.
That should do the trick.

Both doors have come adrift on mine, at different times. There is one hinge top and bottom, consisting of a sleeve bolted to the door and a bolt through this into the chassis. Any friction between the bolt and the sleeve will tend to undo the bolt, and you can get quite a lot of friction due to corrosion and dried up grease.
Sorry your door fell of but I wish we could have got it on video. Would have been a classic.
Worth just peeling back the carpet in the foot well and checking the bolts there are still attached. I guess these could work loose because on mine they are not locking nuts and don't have threadlock on then. I wouldn't like to over tighten them either because they sit on a washer against the GRP.

Cheers for all the replies and advice ! Am still too scared to open the door again myself in case it just falls in the road...
Luckily my brother-in-law who's a bit talented mechanically has offered to take a look at it this week, as apparently the same thing happend to his Alpine A610 a couple of years ago.
Worst comes to the worst, I'll take some of those extra long clown shoes & a water squirting flower in part exchange...

You did well with the UJ as I found that very awkward and having a ratchet spanner on hand made it one of the easier jobs I have done on the Griff so far. Gassing Station | Griffith | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
