I've just bought a beautiful early Porsche 944 in black, heres some pics -

I now have an oval dash car and my new early car. The early car is a MUCH better sports car, I LOVE it biggrincloud9

Already ordered a full black leather interior.

Lovely cars.

Keep looking at 944s to use as a track car.

One question, though - why do nearly all 944s I see have Mick plates on them?

Mick plates?

If you want a track car get an early one, much more fun to drive

Mick plates = Northern Irish plates.

Ah, I've no idea, my two came with them.

The gold one, Pixie, had it since 1995, the black one since the year 2000 if I remember rightly from the history.

Much sharper to drive. The later cars are not sports cars or GTs IMHO but the early cars - WOW what fun biggrin The late cars feel a bit too soft. The early cars feel more special once ou're behind the wheel looking at the three instrument pods and feel more of a classic car for a start. smile

Theres more transmission noise and more of an occassion when you drive it, the late cars are a bit too detached in my opinion.

The gear change is a little better, more precise in my opinion. I have drove numerous later cars so know it's not just the two I've had

I love these. Been looking for a 1983 example when I have the money, in black or red with the Fuchs alloys and as original as possible

944 can do no wrong in my opinion. Had a black '89 one a few years back, a 2.7 with teledials.

When I sold it I treated myself to a lovely old acoustic guitar with part of the proceeds, but as time went by it became more and more difficult to play it without feeling guilty - so I've now sold that as well!

Very nice. Much prefer the black one! What are you doing with the Gold one, keeping both?

May I be as bold as to ask how much it set you back? I'm considering a 944 as a fun, affordable daily commuter/run-around with possibly the odd track day thrown in. Do you have classic insurance?

Cheers. smile

That looks fab - Black is the best colour for sure, and it has the best wheels.
I'd also be interested to know roughly how much you paid for that car!

Heres a question - have you any experience of the 924S? I've been looking at those recently, and that or a very early 944 just like this would be an ideal next car.
It seems to me that despite actually not being that different when talking about really early 944's like this, that a 924S seems a cheaper option. It looks like 2-3000 could bag a really nice one at a private sale. I've just spotted THIS absolutely great looking one on a private sale tonight, bloody miles and miles away from me now typically.
I believe if your really lucky and get an '88 model, then you also get the full 163hp version from the 944, rather than the usual 150hp of the other 2.5 924S's.

I have to say I also think I like the Square dash more too, it certainly is much more 'retro', and I'm almost on the verge of saying I prefer the 924 body to the 944, not sure though.

My one worry (as its my biggest complaint about my current car) is about the character of the engine - what do they sound like? Boring, normal 4cyl sound? I'm hoping there a little bit more tuneful than your average 80's/90's 4 banger. I believe there quite smooth and torquey feeling though right - extra CC's and balance shafts?

I've been watching this video a lot recently - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-1nYTEpDVc&fea... - looks great fun and looks like it drives just like a Coupe MX-5 would - beautifully balanced, not much grip, all in slow motion, makes you feel like a hero!

Looks a great car though, I'd love to know your thoughts!

I love 944's. My dad used to have one when I was about 12, a white 2.5 Lux with teledials. (Where are you now ABZ 6462?) That car started my interest in Porsches - much rather have a Porsche than any Ferrari
