.......watches often seem to come with ridiculously sized and/or opulent boxes? And that got me thinking; what is the best (or worst) examlpe of this?

If you're dropping £5k on a watch you don't want it to come in a jiffy bag do you?

hehe

To me, a decent looking box makes the purchase (and opening) all the more special ... IMHO, half the buzz of my watch addiction is unraveling my latest acquisition smile

Nice boxes are indeed part of the experience of buying and owning watches.

However, I've ended up with a big pile of them in a spare room which seems somewhat of a waste.

Always annoyed me. I have a few Omegas and a Breit. - all came in huge boxes that must add to the cost yet go in the bin once opened. There should be a "stick it in a plastic bag" option when buying!

Don't get me wrong - if you're dropping a reasonable amount of money on something you want it to come fairly well packaged. It's just that some boxes seem ridiculous. Rolex seem relatively understated by reference to what they come in.

Any more exaples out there...

Lovely Dornbluth by the way.

Boxes are lovely, and part of the appeal of acquisition. An absolute PITA once you've done so though, and a bit of a security issue. My safe at home is well hidden, but all a passing burglar would need to do is open up a cupboard in our living room to know that *somewhere* in the house is all the good stuff. Far from ideal...

lol - i knew someone would say this.....but seriously, once you've open the box and taken the watch out - what use is it? My watches live in my wife's jewellery cupboard so I have no need for them.

The only cases I keep are my 3 G shock tins...thats a cool way to pack a watch!

Because if you come to sell it, it will help enormously if you can say "box and papers."
