Effect of engine map on insurance
Discussion
Afternoon All,
I own a E46 330cd that has recently come out of the BMW warranty and I've been researching getting it mapped with Simon from E-Maps. I'm wondering what the effect the engine map might have on my insurance policy when I tell them... I know if I don't the policy will be invalid and being an honest sort of chap, I will be telling them!
I know I could pick up the phone but they are closed on Sunday's so I thought you guys and girls would know!!
Thanks in advance!

You should tell them - as the car will have a modification.
Some individuals dont say anything and I can understand why.
Insurance companies are not going to hook up cars to diagnostics after every accident.
There is an element of risk, but I'd say it was low.
The problem is, if the low risk backfires and an undisclosed modification is found, things can get very complicated and expensive. Some individuals dont say anything and I can understand why.

Should the insurance company get suspicious and decide to investigate further, (unlikely as it maybe), you could find yourself charged with driving without valid insurance and having to repair/replace your damaged car out of your own pocket.
With the increasing popularity of re-maps and insurance companies eagerness to avoid having to make payouts, how long will it be before they do investigate the ECU as standard in every crash?.
Despite what some companies claim, that their re-maps are untraceable, re-maps can actually be detected quite easily as all it requires is to read the ECU parameters and compare them to the standard factory settings. Any undeclared alterations to the parameters that cannot be explained would then be grounds to invalidate the insurance.
That's not a gamble that I'd be happy to take TBH.
