Having decided to sell my E46 M3 ,2004 model for which i think is a reasonable price why does something that should be pretty straight forward get so annoying? I have recieved numerous calls ranging from cheeky to downright rude and beyond,I have had people asking if they have to wear special glasses because the sat nav has been upgaded to 3d,is it 4wheel drive, would i swap for an alfa, would i accept 8 grand cash pal cos i can collect it now (only short by £4,500 ) and now i am getting abusive calls in the early hours asking if i want the effin money or not!Bill.

You dont want to put your phone number down just email address on your add, then you don't get knobs ringing you talking rubbish and if people are really int they will email you as first contact and the rubbish emails you can just delete, Although everyones after a bargain nowadays,

Im afraid we all have to put up with it when trying to sell a car. There is nothing more annoying though than someone offering you £8k for a car you have advertised for £12.5k.Some people are just thick or stupid.

Im afraid thats really normal when selling an M3. Loads of people have said the exact same thing when selling theirs.

Just try and identify the idiots quickly and send them on their way.

It can work both ways - twice in the past 10 days or so I have emailed sellers and heard nothing back.

Which is your advert?

I had a similar thing when selling my M5.
People would text me - why text? And want to know nothing other than what would I take and what are the tyres like. Ridiculous.

Any serious buyer browses the classifieds and phones you.

I ignored all texts unless they were someone I had spoken to already and liked the sound of. I guess that's the luxury of not being in a rush to sell.

Are you sure? I have browsed classifieds and e-mailed sellers late at night (when one wouldn't want to receive a call) - you don't have to phone to demonstrate you are a serious buyer. I bought my 997 having contacted the seller via e-mail in the first instance.

Yes.

Personally I would have phoned first thing in the morning so I would have known there and then if it was available/as advertised, but I'm glad it worked out for you.

I have had this with cars, its a total nightmare. I was selling a car a few years back and I was constantly getting calls saying will you take X amount, which was about 60% of the asking price. Best answer to give is usually, 'well, would you if you were selling the car? no, I thought not, get fked. smile

Agreed, most dreamers will send you an email, because it's much less embarrassing for them to offer a silly low price, then they don't have to listen to your derisory laugh over the phone.

Hmm not always, whenever I'm buying a car, e-mail is usually my first point of contact as it allows me to make sure I ask the questions I want to and gives the seller time to look up any information before responding to me. It's then followed up with a phone call if i'm interested and want to take it further.

But on the flip side i'll agree that when i've been selling I've had plenty of offers for cars via e-mail which they describe as cheeky and I describe as pointless..

If you've found people offering you stupid amoounts and well below what your asking for the car, maybe an idea to add 60% on top of what you want! Then at least when they offer you £8k for a car advertised at £12k then you'll be able to reply saying you'll accept their offer.

Goes with the territory I'm afraid, I sold my M3 through Pistonheads, at least 75% of the enquiries I got were from nutters.....

I normally text/email to see if the car is still available and then phone to get details. Thinking about it, I think I may have emailed you when you where selling your M5. I don't think you responded, now I know why smile

I've done this in respect of pretty much every car I've bought and feel it works well - you get answers to key questions, then you follow up with a phone call if you're still keen. Ignoring buyers simply because they email rather than call is probably not sensible. It's usually fairly obvious whether a potential buyer is serious or a dreamer though, from either an email or call.

lol

I bought mine off a PH'er. Messaged a few times to get details, emailed him when I was on holiday to get the details of the car, saw the car, had a test drive, thought about it for a few days, made offer, sold the following week, done. No hassles, no BS from either side. A very nice guy to buy from.
