Chatting to a retired friend today who is building up his mileage due to some teaching. He currently has a 2005 Toyota Corolla T3 1.6.

He would like something a little newer (i.e. "nearly new", maybe 6-18 months old) with similar accomodation / performance but better economy, preferably not a diesel (small petrol engines are favoured as overall mileage is not huge and undue complication is to be avoided).

He has a slight preference for Japanese cars of around the same engine size as he has enjoyed his Corolla, but definitely wants better than his current 37mpg (>30mpg sounds good enough to me but then I do about 2k miles p/a and am not retired yet hehe ). No budget was set but I'd guess this sort of car would fall into the £8-12k bracket?

I struggled to recommend anything, mainly because I've never owned that sort of spec but also because I stopped reading car mags regularly years ago. I mentioned the following in no particular order:

Ford Fiesta (probably what I'd buy)
Mazda 3
Honda Civic
Suzuki Swift (Outsider)

He seemed unconcernewd with German cars (I was thinking the new polo or a Golf V perhaps) and asked about Nissan's but I don't think the Almera has been replaced has it? The new micra I know nothing about.

Whilst this isn't a juicily "PH" sort of question any recommendations gratefully received.

Cheers!

of that list, I'd go for the fiesta. its supposed to get about upto 50mpg (i might be wrong). the ride would be more grown up thenthe mazda3. the engine in the swift is supposed to be abit on the noisy side, and its supposed to get noisy around the top of the windscreen

Thanks. I recommended the Hyundai i20 / i30 and the C'eed is based on the latter isn't it?

He doesn't seem bothered by a Golf but we'll see. Yaris would be a good choice but his wife has just bought one smile
