I would speak to someone like Henry at 911virgin.com. Lots of other good independatns about, its just that I know Henry best and he does know his cars. Strasse in Leeds are also well known (0113 2340911) but neither sell a great many cars of this age.

I thnik these cares were galvanaised from around 76-78 and I would go for one later thant this.

Lots and lots to look out for but essenially a good SC or early 3.2 will be a fantastic car, but there are lots of bad ones at this age. Not sure if Targas are better/worse than coupes - they should certainly cost less. I am guessing a bit on budget but personally would not want to spend less than 9 or more than 11

Not sure of Yorkshire specialists. Ninemeister (9mracing.com) is down the M62 in Warrington IIRC. I'd become a member of Porsche Club GB (about 50 GBP a year) as you can get insurance discounts plus their mag has lots of classifieds and dealers and specialists in it.

Check out the 'Porsche home' section of PH for buying guides, there may be one for the older 911s. Also search these forums as the topic has been covered a lot in the past.

In a nutshell, my recommendation would be to get a 3.2 Carrera 1984-1989 as these are less prone to rust and had many more things sorted than the 3.0SC (late seventies) and the 2.4/2.7 cars before it.

Beware a cheap 911. I still maintain that one of any vintage will cost approx 2k a year to maintain. Some people get lucky and run one annually for the cost of a major service, but a set of rear tyres a year, some preventative treatment and some bits breaking will soon add up. Even using dismantlers and factor parts places.

Really? I think Henry has admitted in the past he doesn't know a badger's bottom from a sump plug. But then again he does know a bit about trading in 911s. Just don't ask him to grease your nipples or fiddle with your whipple nuts. He gets Jonas at JZ Machtech to do all that

Oh yes Jonas is definately the boy for geasing your nipples. A bit far from Yorkshre, but I have always found them fantastic.

Don't underestimate the potencial costs of running a slighly dodgy 911 - way way more than a 944

Try Paul at Paul Stephens Specialist Cars in Cambridge - an excellent dealer who puts a lot of effort into putting people into the right car - a few years back he worked hard to persuade me to by a cheaper car than the one I wanted.

You are looking at an SC Targa. I had one of these and they are cracking cars. Go for one of the 204bhp cars and buy on condition.

Look for accident damage, oil tightness, evidence of regular expenditure (servicing and repairs), condition and water-tightness of the targa panel. Don't worry about worn synchro on 1st but get concerned if its started to go on 2nd too. Get an independent inspection done if you can.

Some will tell you to get a slightly newer Carerra but I would say that you would get a better SC for the same money.

For a really good one, expect to pay 8-10k
