I am putting together an all Irish team to contest the Britcar 24 hours 2011 and would welcome any advice

I have a brand new built E46 M3 3.2 GTR bodied car running around 360/370 BHP so it looks like it would fit in Britcar GT Class 3 perfect and Britcar production class 1 but not sure 100% if i will use this car yet as i also have a standard E46 body M3 that i am building that will have around 340bhp

I also have most of the equipment including truck tools setup equipment spares etc apart from some small things like team radios and fuel dump churns

Just a few questions

(1) Class 3 in Britcar GT seems to be the very same power to weight as Class 1 in Britcar production ( am i right in thinking they are the same and will be running together as class 3 in the 24 hours)

(2) Is it possible to rent the pit radios for the 24 hours and if so what are the costs

(3) What is the cost of insurance if the car was valued at say £35000

(4) What sort of buget woud you guys expect to need for a car like this in the 24 hours

(5) Would i be allowed reduce the BHP to say 280 and run 1300kg to run in class 4 or would it be better to just run in class 3

(6) How many sets of tyres would i need to buget for as a minimuim to be on the safe side including testing

(7) Roughly how many litres of fuel would i need to buget for

(8) How many sets of rims would i need to bring to be on the safe side

(9) The car has a Drenth sequental but we dont have a spare so i was thinking of useing a H pattern as i have a spare one and most of the drivers never used a sequental

Class 3 GT is very competitive, probably the most competitive class, you'll be up against some fairly quick and reliable cars, ours for a start and we run a 997 GT3 car. Production 1 is separate as far as I know but just ring Britcar and they will give you most of the answers to the questions you have posed.

As for budget, a dry race will see you through a fair number of tyres, don't know about the rate of use for a BMW but we came 3rd overall and first in GT class 3 in the 2010 race and used 13 sets @ circa £800 per set with our 996. Fuel was about 60/65 lts = circa £120 per hour, consumables, say £2000, race fees up to £4000,dependent when you commit, race support for a 10 man team would be £5000 plus unless you run yourselves and every one does it for expenses only, add transport, food and rest facilities, preparation, testing and all the other bits that you need to cover and I guess you will be in the region of £30k if you are lucky and god knows what if you include real prep costs. That's what I would estimate as the costs, for race and testing.

Damage, plus any major parts used will of course add more. Other items include insurance, night racing prep, e.g lights and reflective decals.

Some teams manage to run in production for as little as £3k a seat, can't see how they do myself, but hey, I'm no expert, mind you ,that a four driver team, GT 1 is more like £15k per seat, so somewhere between £12k and £60k is your answer. wink

I'd budget around £2 - 2.5k to insure the full value of the car for the 24Hr weekend (you have my contact details now!).

Thanks lads for all the advice so far

I have put together some costs that i think are pretty accurate to run at this event in 2011 but please corrct me if i am wrong or let me know do i need to add anything

Entry .................................................. .............................................. £4440 inc vat

Tyres 12 sets conseritave (£1113.60 inc vat per set)...................................£13363 inc vat

Fuel 1800 litres @ £2.50 per litre (60 litres per hour 30 hours total running)..... £4500

Transport of team staff car and equipment .............................................. £1000 inc vat

Preperation of car before race (parts only)............................................. ... £4000 inc vat

Food for drivers and team at circuit .................................................. ...... £1000

Britcar Night numbers and decals .................................................. .......... £500 inc vat

Radio Rental .................................................. .................................... £1200 inc vat

Race sundrys .................................................. .................................... £1000

Insurance (excess £4000) .................................................. ................... £2500

Body repairs and paint after race .................................................. ......... £1000

Race engineer for 4 days .................................................. ......................£1000

Motorhome rental .................................................. ................................£700

The total i am coming to so far is £35663 but i do hope to shave this down and this is running the car myself and getting mecanics for free and i am not trying to make a penny from it and i will be covering the rebuild costs myself

Unfortunatly we are not allowed claim the vat for goods consumed in the uk but i might forward buy the tyres without the vat and ship them to Ireland and then take them back across with me as that would save £2500

You might want to turn that on it's head and consider that the car starts the weekend in mint condition (which it should) - what will it cost to get it back to that condition after the race?

What i mean by that is new brakes for the race gearbox refresh diff check and new wheel bearings before the race

But your probably more accurate by doing it after the race

I would definitly get some advice from a Irish based or UK firm of accountants. Failing that approuch, which would be a suprise if unsurmountable, given the way good firms of accountant can steer one through VAT issues, you may benifit from a touch of lateral thinking on how to best use the funds available to you depended on where these funds come from wink

You need an accountants input, must be a few on here that can point you in the right direction via a personal e-mail as there is no way they would post same on an open forum and certainly not free of charge hehe

Whats the difference? You will have to run new significant parts before and as the owner or preparer of the car you will also have to replace them after so you can use it safely/predicably again for atesting or whatever else you run it in. Besides if something fits into the wear and tear category of replacment surely you should be carrying spares during the race, so some of these parts will almost certainly be extra cost again as they get used in the event to fix problems!
