Think it's just expired! No warning...just gone! Had a quick look and there appears to be lots of movement in shaft and what appears to be lumps out of the back of the fan? Can it be anything else? Is it a pain to do or am I best recovering it to my local indie? Happened 2 mins from home car faltered so turned around and limped home, car trying to stall almost like it was running out of petrol! Any ideas/thoughts?

It's a fairly straightforward DIY. Generally the pumps tend to last 60-90K miles - they're a weak spot. Just hoping the rough running isn't from overheating the engine and blowing the head gasket. If it threw the belt your alternator would have stopped as well so rough running could be from low voltage. Replace the pump and see how it goes.

Almost certainly water pump. I changed mine as a preventative measure. About £25 from GSF. i was going to do it myself, but my local Indy only wanted about £30 to do it as the same time as a service. Wasn't worth getting my hands dirty.

I had exactly the same symptoms when the pump died on my 530, rough running suddenly and noise, the pump bearing had given up.

If your not handy with spanners then I would get someone to do t for you, I did mine myself and do all my own spannering, the only difficulty was when the viscouse fan coupling refused to undo from the water pump, this was made even more difficult by the fact the water pump pully was wobbling around all over the place. I ended up having to take the fan shrowd off and take the water pump off complete with the fan and pulley attached, it will go this way but is a bit of a cow.

If your ancilliary drive belts and tensioners have never been changed then you may as well change these while your working around there.

Thanks guys. Have spoken to my local indie and he reckons about £200. He is adamant that it is the water pump. Thankfully it happened about 1/4 mile from home before it even got warm and I limped home. It is being recovered there tomorrow! Could do it myself but can't afford to have any complications/hold ups and they can do it by the weekend. Checked on the amount of disassembly involved and apparently you have to remove the radiator etc, He says the labour will be c£60 and the water pump about the same plus antifreeze and new belts etc.

I replaced the water pump on my 530i about 12 months ago.
It cost around £30 from GSF and fitting did not involve removing the radiator.

Sounds about right; 2 yrs ago my indie did the same job for me for £192.
