Keys and Gray were recorded during transmission of Saturday's Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool complaining that the assistant referee, Sian Massey, probably didn't know the offside rule and that someone "fked up big" by appointing a female match official. "The game's gone mad," said Keys, the channel's football anchor. The recording was not broadcast, but was passed to the Mail on Sunday by an anonymous source.

Massey, 25, was running the line in a Premier League game for only the second time and made a crucial, finely judged offside decision when Fernando Torres scored the first goal for Liverpool. She is one of three assistant referees selected for promotion by the Premier League and has been earmarked as a potential official in for the biggest matches. There are 853 female referees in England and the number is rising.

In the 50-second exchange, Gray also attacked Wendy Toms, who in the late 90s became the first female assistant referee in the Premier League, saying: "She was fking hopeless as well." Keys turned his fire on Karren Brady, the deputy chair of West Ham, who on Saturday wrote a newspaper column saying she had been the victim of sex discrimination from the football media. "See charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism?" Keys said. "Yeah. Do me a favour, love."
Oh dear!!!

Richard Keys: Well, somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.

Andy Gray: Yeah, I know. Can you believe that? Female linesman. Forget what I said – they probably don't know the offside rule.

RK: Course they don't.

AG: Why is there a female linesman? Somebody's fked up big.

RK: I can guarantee you there'll be a big one today. Kenny [Dalglish, Liverpool's manager] will go potty. This is not the first time. Didn't we have one before?

AG: Yeah.

RK: Wendy Toms.

AG: Wendy Toms, something like that. She was fking hopeless as well.

RK: [exasperated groan]

AG: [inaudible]

RK: No, no, it's got to be done, it's good. The game's gone mad. See charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Yeah. Do me a favour, love.

They showed it on MoTD just now, and it was definitely onside. Perhaps they should offer her the pundit's role? It'd be better than listening to old men who are bitter that football didn't pay well enough to let them retire to Dubai when they were playing...;)

It was a very good call by the lineswoman, all credit there.

With female officials, I wonder (hope) if this will reduce the disgusting habit players have of rearing up to and swearing/mouthing off to the officials when they don't get their own way.

From my unbiased point of view she was terrible. She missed at least 17 Wolves penalties and all of Liverpool's goals were offside. hehe

I thought she had a bloody good game actually and that is surely the best way to gain acceptance, I'm not sure it is fair to crucify people for off-air comments, afterall these people are paid to have an opinion, all they have done is make themselves look stupid. At least neither of them dropped the "N" Bomb eh?

I'm not usually one to back "polictical correctness" but in this case I really think they should go, on air or off air that is totally unprofessional.

Fair enough if you want to slag off an official for a stty decision but their gender should mean bugger all.

What gets me is this is far worse than the Rodney Marsh gag - yet as has been alluded to both Keys and Gray are probably too 'big' for Sky to sack.

I run the line regularly for my son's football team, e.g. when there's no one else willing to do it!

We get ref's from the "referee's central repository" (or wherever it is they appear from) that come and do the games each sunday.

We had a female ref turn up a few week's back. Bloody brilliant it was, never seen the lads (aged 15) all behaving themselves and be so polite before or since! smile

Mind you, she did prattle on a bit to the players during the game. Tart! LOL

thats brilliant.

i manage and train a ladies football team, and i have to say that they love the game, put their all into everything, and a lot of blokes and lads (esp lads) could learn a lot from them and their attitude to the game, officials and opposition.

the lino was spot on, good luck to her.

i have played in games reffed by women and they have been very good, i suppose as they try that little bit harder.

in on match a guy was gobbing off all the time, 21 other players getting fed up with him, and eventually he slide in from behind. she called him to the far corner of the pitch with his captain, and sent him off. he had to walk the entire length of the pitch with his own team telling him he was a muppet smile

its doens't matter who you are, men, women, black, white, blue, 3 legs, if you want to play football you should be allowed to play it.

I'd like to think that's deliberate irony, after what they were discussing, but it's not is it?

Which makes it even funnier.

Er why is Keys too big to sack? Nobody outside of watching Sky Sports 1 has ever heard of him. AG most/all UK footy fans know, but mostly because he was one top of the top UK strikers back in the day, but RK? Knock it off, Sky could sack him tomorrow and nobody would blink.

The only thing I'm surprised about is that two stalwarts like this could get caught out so easily. You'd have thought that after Ron Atkinson and Gordon Brown, that people would learn something.
