In recent years I've had to give up my ownership of Blackpool's finest in order to pay for things like a roof over the wife and kids heads! I now need to replace my daily-driver Subaru WRX here in NZ and I just can't face buying another Jap' hatch. So, I'm wondering if a Taimar or 3000M might not fit the bill as an interesting daily driver until I get around to restoring my BMW 2002Tii.

With that in mind I am planning on coming home to the UK in June/July so was wondering if anyone knows of any cars coming up for sale in the coming months if they could post here or send me an email? Ideally I'd like a car with any chassis work taken care of mainly due to the strict nature of the LTSA here that have to pass the car fit for the road. I can get cosmetics taken care of here as the labour costs tend to be a lot cheaper. My preference would be for a Taimar for the added practicality but a 3000M or even a 2500M or 1600M wouldn't be sniffed-at.

What would you expect to pay for a good useable Taimar/3000M? I was thinking a max of 5K - is that realistic these days?

Cheers

Jamie

What are your roads like. The Taimar hatch can rattle on poor surfaces, might push you towards an M for daily driving.

My daily commute is mainly motorway. Most other roads are pretty crappy even by UK standards - very large and noisey chip - but I wouldn't expect it to ride like a Jag or be built like a Merc' though anyway. I owned a Chimaera here for over 10 years so I'm used to noisy with the occasional rattle/squeak!

Like I said before if a nice 3000M was available I wouldn't turn it down.

Jamie,

It depends on the amount of work you will find acceptable as to whether you can find a car for £5k. It's very much at the low end, so for £5k the chassis will probably be original and the paint & trim past their best.

The 1600M may be your best bet as you will get a bit more/better for your £'s. I ran one for 6 years as my daily driver and loved it. It not quite so comfortable at high speed cruising (80mph+) but it handles much better than the 2500M & 3000M as the engine weighs in at around half their weight which really improves balance. The downside is that their aren't as many around.

Hi Jamie,
I have a customer that had intended to finish the cosmetics on a 3000M (paint and trim and rewire...which I believe for NZ will need to be coloured loom anyway) after a full chassis and running gear rebuild....you could choose to do those yourself, PM me and I could put you in touch.
