I've put 1500 miles on the car since I first topped it up and it currently reads about 0.3 / 0.4ltr above the low marker. When I was researching these cars I was told the oil warning would come on appox every 1k miles. How far are you getting between refills?

every 500 miles on the m5 or so.
every 2k miles on teh M6 or so
Both are within manufacturer's allowable extremes according to the BMW service desk guy when i complained about the M5's necessity to carry a can or two of oil in the boot...

2lt in 5k. Fast motorway driving eats the oil.

Cool, sounds like my car is quite normal then. I've been doing mostly town driving so that would explain it.

Hi Eddie!

I go 3000 miles between top-ups.

Just noticed my oil level indicator in the instrument cluster has stuck on 0.7 litres.....won't reset....anyone know a simple fix? (appears to have happened after oil service at BMW....related?)

Not sure how to reset it, but see bottom of this txt. Mine doesnt actually have a oil quantity figure like the saloons seem to have. It has a hollow rectangular bar which is filled according to how much oil there is in the system. I just work out that the bottom of the bar is 0.0 litres and the top is 1.0 litre. Not sure how accurate this is but the 'bong' will tell me.

As for your calibration. The button on the left hand stalk that scrolls through mpg, temp, oil etc. If you press and hold it does this reset and re-read the level? Mine checks the car for faults and i assume it checks oil etc aswell. Give it a try.

Thanks Eddie.

It's that reset button on the stuck that is not doing anything.

It's no big deal I suppose....will let the powers that be fix it shortly.

Press and hold BC on the oil level, ensure the engine is at full operating temperature and at idle. You'll see a clock icon appear for a few seconds, then it should give a new reading.

Mine uses 0.5 every 2200 kms. When the oil gets older/thinner I find it starts to use more oil.

I have just checked mine ahead of a long journet tomorrow and it shows the bar near the bottom and +1L next to it. I assume I need to add 1L then. Off to the stealer I go!

M50WCH was using a litre every 800 miles when it went, the new 2010 one is only using a litre every 2500 so far, I guess it increases with mileage

Mine seems to do about 1500/2000 miles between top ups. The gauge seems to read ok for ages and then all of a sudden drops down to say add +1.

Only add the oil when you get the oil warning symbol on the DIS. Not before as it might upset its schedule.

The oil consumption increases with increased engine and road speed. Town drivers will use less oil (maybe every 2k to 3k miles) than fast motorway drivers (maybe 1k miles).#

I got the Oil warning on the DIS earlier so I chucked a litre in. Cost me 20 quid from dealers! I am off to order the 4L from EuroCarParts ASAP!!! Might get a truck load in for future services.
