Classic range rover bad running
Discussion
Hi guys any one got any thoughts on my Range rover problem, tick over is erratic, driving along say 2k rpm backfires down on power, if I floor it, she picks up fine and clears, have replaced, plugs, leads, coil, cap and rota arm, vacum on teh distributer, ignition amp and tried a new AFM
any thoughts?
any thoughts?
Hi,
Sounds odd but trust me check the water level and make sure there's no air at the top hose. There are two temperature sensors just behind the dizzy on the coolant system one for the gauge and one for the ECU. What can happen is that either the sensor goes la la or there's an airlock there so the ECU thinks it's still cold so dumps a load of juice down the engine. The other thing to look at is the throttle stepper motor.
I had a 3.9 classic that wouldn't go through the emissions test, had numerous visits to local indy's who diagnosed anything from new cats to an ecu and all it needed was a plug change to resistive plugs and a new sender.
Cheers,
Mike

Not sure on the age of the Classic but I know on the 3.9 Disco the stepper motor on the top of the plenum on the o/s often needs cleaning 2 min job. Take off connector, unscrew clean the unit and inside where the plunger sits in the plenum with a cotton bud.

Steam clean and then a miss fire, I'd be looking at WD40'ing all the leads dizzy cap and sensor connetcors. Sounds like moisture trapped somewhere to me. I had a similalr prob on my 968CS when I degreased the engine, water was trapped down the HT leads in the head and couldnt escape, this resulted in a misfire even after spluttering along the M20 at ???mph.

Did you put the leads back on in the right order? This would give lumpy running but not sure if it would all seem fine at higher speeds.any thoughts?
