I had my first play at some studio photography yesterday and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately dealing with the subjects (something i've never done before) really distracted me and I ended forgetting all the things I wanted to try and remember.

I was so eager to get an expression that looked good I didn't even think about the fact I was standing in front of the lights! Techniques went straight out the window!

I wouldn't mind improving though and the thing I really lack is the basic knowledge. I twiddle with buttons and trial and error until I like it however I don't really know what it all does! I did one of the PH car shoots which was really good however apart from that i'm clueless!

What is the best way to learn? Is there an easy going book or good basic course I could go on? I'm interested in studio stuff at the moment but guess I need an all round beginners guide?

Anything online worth following?

Here is a couple of shots from yesterday which I think look ok, lighting is all wrong but they liked them. What do you think?

They don't seem too bad!

Camera settings are easy - manual exposure, set shutter to synch speed (eg 1/200th) and control exposure with aperture and lighting power. After that it's up to you. Light travels in straight lines and the larger the modifier, the softer the shadows and the more power you need. There's no such thing as 'right' lighting, there are certain established methods but just work out what you like.

Probably thousands! I prefer to look at photos I like and work it backwards. There are no 'right' answers; the possibilities are limitless.

As Simpo says, there's loads of online material. My favourite source for lighting tips (mainly with Speedlites) is Neil van Niekerk's blog. Well-explained with lots of examples.
