What with all this talk of fuel prices and MPG we should man up and realise why we drive the cars we do and say sod the MPG. smile I get 18mpg day to day but last night I went the long way home and remembered why I love my car and why I will continue to pay £90 to fill it up. Feel free to post your positive thoughts about MPG (or buy a diesel, mapped obviously) smile

Wouldn't say I was proud of my fuel consumption, but it doesn't bother me at all. Buying these cars in the hope they will give good returns on fuel is mad! Its a high reving, highly tuned motorsport engine with no thought to how much juice it burns. The cars only desire is to work for the driver and produce the best driving experience money can buy. I love my M5, having a VPower card makes it even sweeter.

My feelings exactly, I did the costings on selling the M5 and replacing it with a late 535D, when the cost of depreciation , maintenance and fuel were considered it was far less expensive to keep the M5, it may feel depressing at the pump, but that is simply because you are reminded of the running costs on a daily/weekly basis. When you make a vehicle purchase the expense/loss is made once, the invisible cost of deprecation doesn't bite until you sell, so you *feel* you are making savings as payments at the pump are lower and less frequent. Based on my annual mileage it worked out 7K cheaper over 2 years to keep the M5.

Yesterdays trip out just confirmed what I already knew, that it is a fantastic car and better than the E60 535D in so many respects. To hell with the fuel costs. Even the wife prefers it.

My M5 feels positively frugal compared to the S4 that it replaced smile

Average over 27,000 miles in 18 months is 19mpg.

On track/nuerburgring, I go through a full tank in 100 miles! driving

That's quite worrying, which S4 was it?

Before I bought my M5 I was originally looking at B6 & B7 S4s as a means to obtain the V8 noise but with slightly better economy (being a smaller engine).

I realise these Audis are heavy, especially with the quattro system, but my car is returning around 14mpg in town - I'd be shocked to hear the S4 is worse.

Even my 300bhp Evo8 did 17-18mpg in town.

I'm not proud of 22mpg, I'd much prefer 222mpg with the same power.

I just try to make sure I enjoy every drip used.

B6 Avant manual - I think the manual has lower gear ratios which didn't help its cause. I understand that the auto has better gearing and is more economical.

Unusual amount of time behind the wheel this week biggrin - by Saturday I'll have done approx 1000 miles and spent nearly £300 in 8 days but I've absolutely no intention of changing the M.

In the grand scheme of car ownership, the cost of your fuel is not something that bothers me!

The worst mpg I have seen in my M5 is 22mpg. The best is 11mpg. I am hoping to get it to around 9mpg when the roads dry up. beer

Nope, still got it, and still don't want to sell it even though I know I really should, although I may be a bit abrupt with potential buyers when they ask stupid questions.

Getting it detailed Thur/Fri this week so it'll be ready for another set of photos to go along with an updated advert.

I'm getting 12 mpg average with my X5M. Thought about changing it for a diesel???
But after considering it for about 10 seconds I realised I would miss her too much.

Of all the cars I have owned this is by far the most practical and enjoyable smile

So the older M cars are better on fuel. Its weird that a E92 M3 is much worse on fuel then a M5 designed over 20 years ago.
