E36 M3 Non Evo

I'm looking to get an M3 for summer, hopefully a 'vert. I've read alot about vanos issues on the Evo, and I know its a costly job. What about the 3.0? Is there any known common issues on that? I know there is a big BHP difference (40 odd BHP iirc) but I'm not fussed about that as I'd rather have a reliable car.

At most a broken double vanos, as fitted to the 3.2 is around £700 if you use Mr.Vanos and his exchange service.

Vanos issues are grossly over exaggerated compared with the 000s of cars actually made. The Evo is the better car

Peak numbers often not far apart, 40bhp is dream world, nearer 20 odd, but a good 3.2 does feel more notably torquey all through the rev range than a good 3.0, a bad one doesnt.

The 3.0 M3 has a 5 speed gearbox that shifts better and is stronger than than the 6 speed gearbox in the 3.2. The 3.2 will give slighly better mpg on a motorway run though, due to pulling less revs in top.

Well maintained, fighting fit E36s do make rated power but EVOs appear a little more highly strung regarding valve clearances and often drop to 300 if not set correctly.

3.2EVO = 316bhp ~ 258 lb-ft
3.0GT = 291bhp ~ 238 lb-ft
3.0 = 282bhp ~ 236 lb-ft

A fit EVO is significantly quicker than a fit 3.0.

4.5K does look good really value for that, i was hoping to get mine up for sale in the next month or 2 but the market for these seems really slow for the last few months, i guess it's the wrong time of year, banks are refusing to loan anyone money right now and recent insurance rises on an already high banding/risk car are all factors combining to make things a bit hard on those wanting to sell up/move on.
I know i had to look at a lot of quotes before i could even get close to matching last years insurance premium.

Thanks Pat - I think it may well be a bad time for the reasons you list.

I'm not desperate to sell to be honest, but just fancy a change (E39 M5).
