Best and Worst depreciation?
Discussion
Given that most supercars tend to depreciate but the odd ones atually go up in value has anyone either lost of gained excessive amounts? I understand it is all subjective and you pay for the enjoyment of ownership etc but interested in knowing examples. To start the ball rolling I lost £35k on 360 Spider in 18 months but next to nothing on Gallardo Spyder in same period.

Blimey. What did you do? Roll it off a cliff?I made £5k on the Cayman S I had before the 360 and recently sold that for £4k more than I paid for it. I guess if you change cars pretty regularly and look for the bargains without being too fussy on spec/colour then supercar ownership can be relatively cheap!
Buying new and selling after 2/3 years is always going to have the worst depreciation, but I guess you do get the benefit of speccing the car exactly as you want it and the joy of being the the first person to thrash it!

Good friend of mine purchased a nice Rosso Corsa 360M with 27k miles from an Independant dealer in 2007. Year 2000 car - Purchase price £62k (which was in-line with market value at the time)
Spent:
£1k private plate
£500 detailing
£900 service
£800 insurance
£xxx tax
F1 pump failed
£6200 inc clutch from Ferrari Main dealer
Total outlay £71400
After 18 months and just 1500 miles, car went on the market via SOR £48k. No takers, reduced to £45k. No takers so car returned from Ferrari specialist where it was on SOR. £42k privately advertised - no takers. £40k and finally accepted an offer from a private buyer of £38k inc private plate
Cost £33,400 or £22.26 per mile cost of ownership excluding any finance costs (IIRC the car wasn't on finance, but if it had been add another few '000 in costs)

Ouch! But if you include tax, plates, servicing and insurance every motorist takes a shoeing. Spent:

There's a post here earlier today suggesting a bid equating to nearly thirty grand depreciation in four months on a new Cayenne Turbo
I lost £35k on a brand new Cayenne Turbo I bought in 2004 and sold 3 months later. I was dead chuffed!!Lost nowt on my SuperL that I bought in June 09 and sold in Oct 10 though (after 7k very enjoyable miles I will add)

I've been pleasantly surprised with my Gallardo SL. I've had it for 2 and half years, paid £124k for it with 3,000 miles. It's done 13,000 now, not sure what it's worth but I would have thought £90K. With servicing, tyres at say £8k, stands me in at £131k. Works out at about £4 per mile.
any sl sub 100k is headed east

OUCH! Did you do 30k miles in 3 months or something?Put quite a bit of effort into getting the best trade price too
That experience was not the best

Should not be construed as expression of willingness to enter into a contract of sale
