Our Bosch tumble dryer is still going strong after 5 years but now when used for a couple of loads one after the other it is starting to smell fishy.

Its not the air coming out as it vents outside, but I have cleaned out all the vents and filters and it has made it slightly better but not much!

Any ideas?

Fishy means something made of bakelite is getting far too warm.

Some electrical insulater is overheating. You may well have a fluff build up somewhere stopping proper heat dissipation.

Three options really.
1. Take the side off and have a look for a charred looking component.
2. Get a professional to do 1.
3. Bin it and spend £200 or less on a new one.

I wouldn't want to run the risk of one catching fire.

Would a 5 year old bosch dryer really have bakolite components? I was thinking maybe door seals or something!

Quite possibly, or a derivative which smells similar when too hot. I definitely think its part of an electrical component that's overheating.
I'm no sparky, but it's what I think. And I would be concerned about continuing to use it without getting it looked at too.
If you are going to use it I wouldn't leave it unattended, but keep an eye on it.

eta, Today's halogen light fittings have a similar smell when too hot.

Looks like some bargains here. On a good day I'd expect to part with £150 for one, these start at £99!

Do you use liquid detergent? This can cause a smell after a while. Switch to powder.

No plug its hard wired on an isolator.

Will pop the top off and have a good look for anything looking too tired.

Surely cant be that much in a tumble dryer to go wrong....

And we on powder if it makes any difference!

rofl

we had this near the door in our old flat. turned out somebody had a wired a 9kW shower to the consumer unit through 30A cable and the consumer unit got very hot and the wire broke down. replacement with cooker cable and appropriate rcb solved it.

Just in case anyone wants to Google, it's 'Bakelite', after Leo Baekeland. Well not quite, but you get the point smile
