Calling all London snow types:

Can anyone plot me a decent course to the slopes from City Airport. Intend heading out at the end of the season but as my only skiing experience is in the US I have no clue on where to go in Europe?

Thanks, Irish.

BA do a flight to Chambrey from London City, hire a car then drive to Val D'isere which in my opinion is the best resort in the French Alps.

Just got back from there, over 150 runs, easy to access the slopes, great apres ski and high (1850M at base) so conditions are very good.

Depending on your budget you could stay in Hotel Avenue Lodge or Le Saveyarde(may have spelling wrong)

Have fun!

If you're not going out until the end of the season and as long as you are going outside of school holidays, I'd be half tempted to wait until nearer the date before picking a resort.

Based on current weather Val d'Isere wouldn't be my first choice - but give it a couple of weeks and everything could change.

You need to consider
a) how long you are happy to spend in transfer between the aeroport and resort........which is probably affected by your flight times more than anything.
b) and if you are happy to hire a car at the other other end or whether you want to grab a bus to the resort or splash for a taxi
Much as I like Val, it can be an utter pain to get to from the airports if you don't want the hassle/cost of hiring a car --> granted Chambery is the closest airport to Val but you are still looking at a 1.5 - 2 hours drive.
And last time I checked the bus times were incompatible with the flight times

Have a look here - from this portal you'll be able to dive in to detailed pages on the major french ski resorts - snow reports, local info etc
http://www.skinets.com/
That should help you in terms of narrowing the French resorts down......sorry - can't help with the Swiss, Italien, Austrian or resort of Europe.

If you are certain that you want to ski in France and you are based in/near to London another travel option is the train - either direct Eurostar or the TGV (via Paris).
Works for me as I can be at St Pan in 20 mins from home.
And when I compared driving, flying and the train, there was very little in it in terms of cost / time door to door.

My advice - sort out the travel now whilst it's available/cheap and leave everything else till the last minute.

Swiss do several flights a day from City to both Geneva and Zurich. Added bonus is ski carriage on the plane doesn't cost any extra!

From GVA and ZRH there are heaps of resorts to strike out to

Second vote for Swiss - didn't realise they fly from City as I always go from LHR

Thanks. Train in on the sort list at the minute.

If you do this, hire from the Swiss side to avoid a potential 40 euro vignette charge

Fly to Geneva...walk through the airport to the train station. Buy train ticket to Verbier....sit on train for 2 1/2 hours and relax. Get off at foot of mountain where you will have to walk 20 yards to get on a bus to take you up the mountain to the town centre. Fantastic skiing for intermediates and above (plenty of off piste/itinerary runs if that's your thing) as it's very high (by European standards) and brilliant apres ski. Oh and they don't let ugly girls into the town.....the totty is off the charts. Alternatively it's a very easy two hour drive from the airport....all motorway bar the last 10 miles.
