Has anybody reported any problems with the gearbox in a 120D. The box in my coupe has been crap from new, I've been to the dealer about it a few times but they have told me it's normal. I find the change notchy and stiff and at times it's very difficult to engage gears. It's not just when trying to change quickly either, sometimes a slow lazy change from 3rd to 4th will baulk and kick.

I've also had a clutch judder on the car which persisted long enough to have a new clutch and flywheel fitted, plus the supposed adjustments to the software.

For direct comparison I've driven two 320D's (One of which had the clutch judder) recently which had much smoother boxes, as did a 520D and a 118D which I've driven over the past couple of years too.
the car is coming up to three years old soon with 55k on the clock and I'm thinking of laying it on hard this time at the dealer to get it fixed properly, so I'd like a bit of feedback if this is a known issue or not.

Hello, had one from new, though it was a bit poor to start with it is lovely now, though still a tiny bit notchy.

I have seen other more smooth BMW boxes, but it's not bad. I was told that it would be like that and not unhappy with, though it never is a problem on fast changes.

Has it been abused by a prior owner or anything like that? The clutch judder seems to be willing to happen once a month, though I have found a few more revs and gentle on clutch and it's not a problem. It has happened a couple of times when pulling away that is very embarassing for a few seconds if people in the car.

The only abuse it's hard is mine!...
I find quick or slow changes can be a problem, sometimes it's worse than others. The clutch judder can be a real pain, no amount of revs will stop that, it just makes it even more violent. I sometimes cringe when I'm on a hillstart waiting for it, then nothing happens and it pulls away smoothly, then when I'm all relaxed it will catch me again and judder like hell.

I can't really find a pattern to all this, it's fairly random.

To be honest I was hoping the Car would be going back in a couple of months as it's a three year old company one, but it seems I've got it a while longer so I'm damned if I'm going to live with this transmission any longer. I know why they seem to have dropped the 'ultimate driving machine' strap line now... ultimate my 4rse!
