Most people renew their insurance a few days before the policy expires, to make sure they have continuous cover.

What happens if you arrange insurance for the following year on the basis of not having made any claims in the last 5 years... and then have an incident that requires a claim on your soon-expiring policy, before the new one actually starts ?

Since you've paid for the new policy, and at the time you paid for it, you hadn't had any claims, you could argue that there should be no change to the premium for next year. On the other hand, the new policy hasn't actually started, so could it be argued by the insurer that the new information means they can no longer offer you the new policy at the agreed price ?

They reduce the bonus (if not protected) and charge the extra.
