Off to Mayrhofen on Saturday and wondering if I need to sort out a helmet before I go...

Someone mentioned to me that helmets may now be compulsory in certain resorts, and you won't be allowed on the lifts if you do not have one - does anyone know if this is fact or fiction??

Thanks.

Fiction, except for kids I believe (in certain resorts).

Fiction, at least in Europe. In some US resorts under 16s need to have them - unsure if adults do too.

That said, I ski with one. More comfortable than a hat, and mine certainly saved me from a severe concussion 10 days ago. Not expensive at £40-50 for a reputable brand. But a snowboard type one, designed to take a number of small knocks, unlike the race style ones that need to be replaced after one hit (but give better protection in a serious impact).

The last time I visited the ski hill in canada, helmets for kids were obligatory where I was, I chose to wear one as an example to my kids, TBH I forgot it was there after a bit. I would consider buying one if I was skiing regularly.

It doesn't matter how good a skier/snowboarder you are accidents can still happen, it only takes one head injury to have you dribbling soup for the rest of your life!!

hehe I do enjoy a good lmgtfy.

So the first 10 google results to "ski resorts + mandatory helmets" :

1. Travel insurance site quoting that many US resort require them for children
2. calls for helmets to be mandatory
3. Forum post about helmets
4. Torygraph article - mandatory helmets the case against
5. Daily Wail
6. Ahh, finally. This looks interesting: Intrawest to make helmets mandatory But the article says it will recommend that people wear them, and make them mandatory for children + employees.
7. Swiss resorts not making them mandatory
8. California considers mandatory helmets

Now I'm bored typing and I still can't find a single resort that makes helmets mandatory for all.

Natasha richardson died at mont tremblant, which is an intrawest resort, and may be connected to their standpoint certainly there was a lot of talk in Canada at the time about helmets (she wasnt wearing one, when she fell on the nursery slope)

I never wore a helmet skiing but usually my big fur hat and because of a bike accident I have not been skiing for 6 years. I hope to go again but I will be learning again to a certain degree and I think a helmet for me is a must have.
In the past I have fallen and banged my head skiing and the piste can be as hard as the road I ride on wearing a helmet when I have been on a bike.

Most are now mandatory for the little uns.
More like in some countries its mandatory - its mandatory in Italy for under 14s I think (and there are one or two others as well).

After 30 years of skiing, including 8 years living near a resort, so I skied most weekend, we went to Mayrhofen at Christmas, (Helmets are definitely not compulsory), but the rest of the family had one, so I bought one, first day out with it ,I fell on the Hintertux glazier, wife came down to me, I was unconscious, came around quickly and all ok, I'd hate think about if I hadn't had it, so not compulsory by advisable,

If I fell and got brain damage, who would look after me,my family.A life sentance for me and for them.
That isn't fair and all because you're to worried what you will look like.

Now we're on another discussion altogether, which will never go away (helmets good or bad). Discussing helmets is the snow-sports equivalent of discussing fox hunting or 335d's.

Back on topic, no-one can find a resort where helmets are compulsory for all.

Oh, and in case it matters, I've worn a helmet every year since 2001.

This is the bit of most interest to me, relating to my OP...

But still, some of the stories do make you consider them in a different light...

So, not compulsory but recommended.

You can rent helmets in the ski shops. That's what I did before I bought one.

Are they not a bit whiffy, having been sat on someone else's head for most of the preceding week?!

Bought mine and wore it this year for the first time. Just as warm and comfortable as a hat, possibly more so, looks good, sets a good example to the children, and insurance against that unavoidable malchance that leaves you a drooling vegetable. No reason not to, really. Many, many more adults wearing them this year than any other I've been.

I don't remember it being bad, AND it was in France. Remember it's not full face so not like borrowing a crash hat at a kart track.

I don't think they're compulsory anywhere for adults but you notice us Brits are the only ones on the slopes without them so 'when in rome...'. Also, there's lots of trees ready to jump in your way in Austria wink

Ordered mine online and it arrived today, very nice indeed. I've never worn one before but it would be so damn typical if I whacked my head after declining the use of one so took the wise option. Went for a BLOC Flare from sunglassessirect, only £40, who knows, I may even look rad, gnarly and give impression I know what I'm doing.
