Road Trip to Lake Garda - anyone done similar?
Discussion
I prefer :
Calais autoroute to Reims - N44 Saint Dizier - N67 Langres - N19 / N57 Besancon (stop first day )
N57 to Valorbe (Switzerland ) E25/27 around Lake Geneva - stopping off Lausanne / Montreux - Martigny
Up to St. Bernards Pass into Italy- Down to Aosta - Ivrea - Autostada A5/ A4 to Milano - A4 to Garda.
enjoy !

Your route is fine if you are gonna blast down to Lake Garda but you are in spitting distance of the Vosges Mountains and Black Forest on day 1
We do the route to the vosges difference being, Luxembourg Saarbrucken Karlsruhe,Baden Baden, ( German Autobahn there which is unrestricted for 20 miles )
On day 2 you miss some great alpine adventures .... seems a waste check out the WIKI threads

Hi, I'm new to the forum and came across it by accident when doing research on Lake Garda. I was a continental coach driver on the Italy /Lake Garda route for 8 years, (when all the border crossings were in place). My route frome the UK was always the same. Overnight ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge or Rotterdam... Motorways to the Rhine Valley (via Aachen) then through the Austrian Tyrol joining the Brenner Pass and down to Lake Garda. This is a relatively easy drive with spectacular scenery through the Tyrol. We always stayed in Boppard on the Rhine, easily reached in 4-5 hours from the boat. When you are in L.Garda do look at Limone, Malcesine, and at the bottom end of the lake Sirmione. A good day excursion is Venice, or just the half day then Verona is less than an hour away.
Hope you have a great time

We did this trip 2 years ago, definitely put half a day aside on the way down there to visit this place. Amazing collection, you'd be mad to miss it out.

If you've not confirmed all your accom yet I stayed here last year - nice place, good value and good parking (which isn't extra like so many places in Italy). BTW, the roads around the lake get packed at the weekend. Beautiful part of the World.

You really can't beat Route Napoleon - first time I drove it was late 80s in a knackered V6 Capri - oh what fun! I love going back. But for the OP, I'd avoid the E40 and E42 and stay in France until Valorbe:
Amiens
Soissons
Troyes
Dijon
Besancon
Pontarlier
Valorbe
Lausanne
Lake Geneva
From there you have a very tempting choice of passes to take you to Lake Garda. I really like Umbrail, which you can combine with Stelvio. If I could I would go back in a flash (but my last trip cost nearly £2k in fuel alone).
(My suggestion assumes you like A roads rather than Autoroutes)
