ASK is good and is located in the old Grand Assembly Rooms.
Lovely setting, good food, good service, good prices.....very popular.
FFS Simon, you can go to an ASK anywhere in the country! Corporate restaurant mediocrity.Lovely setting, good food, good service, good prices.....very popular.
Dinner: Blue Bicycle (by far the best in York), Meltons, Nineteen (very funky), Plunkets.
Lunch: Biltmore, Oscars Wine Bar, Kennedy's.
Coffee & light bites: Cafe Concerto (unique).
Blue Bicycle will always impress. Have fun!

When you're wandering around the shops during the day, make sure you grab a hog roast. I think there are a couple of branches in York. Roast pork on a massive roll with apple sauce and shedloads of scratchings on the side. Not fine dining but a great filler during the day before dinner.

You forgot the Willow. It's legendary.
+1If you want a chinese in York I can highly recommend Red Chilli.
As per a couple of recommendations on here, I'd suggest Oscars for dinner then moving on to the Biltmore which is just next door for cocktails and then you have Vudu two doors down should you want to drink and dance later on without being surrounded by too many chavs.

-1 unless you and your girlfriend are horny 16 year olds! The fact that this place is a restaurant that needs to have several doorstaff on duty, should tell you all you need to know.

I love food, live in York and eat out a lot.
I don't think anyone has recommended Cafe No 8. It's on Gillygate and probably the best place to eat in York. Everything is cooked from scratch and you can see the kitchen easily. It's on the pricier end but is still good value as the quality of ingredients and cooking is very high. I've eaten in Michelin starred places and they've not been much better. You can tell they care a lot about every dish that goes out.
J Bakers is also nice but the staff can be a bit crap there and the menus tend to be a bit more 'out there' than at Cafe No 8. I recommend the chocolate plate there if they are still doing it.
Nineteen is nice and I've had some good meals there but Cafe No 8 and J Bakers are better. Like many of the old buildings in York, it used to be used as a brothel.
Would also back up Cafe Concerto for a simple lunch, the cakes are meant to be good there too.
For Asian, Indochine is very nice but not been recently. Japanese is useless in York, only place worth going to is Asia Gourmet, also on Gillygate. It's very rough and ready but cheap and quite nice. Haven't found an Indian I could recommend, although there's quite a few average places.
Not been to the Blue Bicycle because I heard some average reviews of it, but will have to check it out.
If you like cocktails and a bohemian vibe, Evil Eye lounge is good for a drink or two.
Hope you have a good trip!
