BBC : Nelson Mandela in hospital: Tight South Africa security

Nelson Mandela: Media vigil outside hospital

Winnie in tears as she leaves hospital

ANC calls for calm

If this is indeed the beginning of the end, there's much speculation in South Africa regarding a possible civil war once he shuffles off this mortal coil.

Whether or not you believe in Uhuru (Google uhuru night of the long knives), it is certainly causing consternation among South Africans.

ITV news just said they've heard he's in hospital for treatment on a collapsed lung.

Why all the speculation that there will be trouble? After all it was the evil white man that caused all of their problems. Since he has been put in his place and rightousness has been restored, why would Mandela passing be a reason for turmoil and unrest?

Because there are some in South Africa who think that Robert Mugabe's way of running Zimbabwe is a model of how South Africa should be run.

And there are many who think that the only reason it hasn't started going that way yet is because the Old Man is still around

Therefore, what you are saying is that their self government is going to be as equally as successful as their fellow African nations here pretty soon?

Once he's gone, South Africa will go down the toilet. Let's face it, apart from him, there don't seem to be many decent leaders in the country. Isn't the current president or maybe the ex, a bit slow and continues to have unprotected sex even though he has HIV?

Alfa's comment's not that far from the truth though.

So is he HIV positive then and has unprotected sex in the full knowledge?

Current leader is dodgy as fk, that much is more or less a given.

Mandela's passing will be sad, that's true. The question will be if anyone will be able to moderate what will sadly be increasingly extreme views once their uniting figurehead is gone. I really hope it's not another Zimbabwe.

Really? you're going to compare the Northern Ireland situation, where the Catholics weren't exactly subjugated, to apartheid? Do you still sit at the very front of the bus, just because?

And SA has improved? I agree apartheid was always wrong, but since, has it developed. Same as Zimbabwe. i Totally agree we give it back to the true owners, but without the oppresive regime would they have thrived? I think not.

Over 3000 White farmers have been murdered since 1994 with Mandela still alive.

Can it get much worse when he dies?

probably

The Uhuru story has been around for quite a while, still gives me a cold chill when thinking about it...

There is major tension in SA,but unfortunately the picture that many see is the happy wonderful rainbow nation...dream on...somethings got to give, and I fear its getting closer...

Days of empire, wrong in many ways. But we also gave a lot.
Not always right but we ruled with many good things too. For a tiny island we gave a lot but maybe took to much.
Name a country that has thrived since we left!

Here's to the the corporate rule, was the empire so wrong? Are there many happier?

Possibly not PC but hey this is PH!

I was last there in 2007 and was shocked at how much it had changed.
Unfortunately it is heading in the direction of Zimbabwe, there have already been indications of a land grab and I'd be very surprised, nay shocked, if Mandelas death was not marked with extreme violence.
