Golf in the Algarve

A few 40 something blokes are going to the Algarve for a few days on a stag weekend. We are all hackers, some more than others, needless to say we are not club members in the UK and do not play that often. But we did fancy maybe a round or two while we were in the Algarve.
Having googled a few sites, it appears that most required a handicap certificate to be able to play a round. Just wondered what peoples experience of this is - is this scarmongery to deter us hackers or is it a given that we all need certificates? I have read that generally 9 hole courses are not so strict.

Haven't been for a few years but this is a pleasant place to while away a couple of hours. It's all fairly short par threes but some of them are quite tricky - nice bar too!! http://valedemilhogolf.com/
