Thinking about a 2008 C220 CDI...good,bad, or terrible?

Hi, new to the Mercedes part of PH, so be gentle.
Looking to move from my X5 3.0D (2009). Still need a good amount of space, but need to downsize on fuel costs and finance costs.
So I'm considering a BMW320d touring, and a C220 CDI at the moment. Can you offer some thoughts on the C220CDI...in terms of reliability, real world fuel economy, things that commonly go wrong, and what MB are like at customer service. I'm in the Chertsey area, so MB World in Weybridge would potentially maintain the car.
The one I've seen (not at MB world) is at an MB dealer with about 25k miles, very well specced and at a decent price. Hopefully going to see it tomorrow.
But before I do, I would hugely appreciate the wisdom of PH on the merits and bad things about the car. I've read a couple of threads on here about the fuel economy of older models, and that the C class is a horrible car...so you're honesty is very welcome....good or bad.

What age/year is the car, is it an auto, and what is the trim level - posting a link to the ad would be helpful..just checked as I thought it may be the same engine as in my E220 cdi, but it's not!
However, in terms of the C Class as a whole, I had an 06 avantgarde with auto and sports pack, ran it for 3 years/36k miles-ish, and it didn't go wrong save from 1 electrical fault which showed up the day I drove it from the showroom. Lovely smooth car to drive, comfortable and relaxing on short or long journeys, good compromise of comfort and handling with the stiffer avantgarde suspension, sports pack gives drilled front brakes with bigger pads for excellent stopping power. Dealers, depends on who I spoke to and what day of the week, service ranged from outstanding to awful! Downsides, the back seats are a squeeze for 3 adults, the boot isn't huge in the saloon, the autobox was a bit jerky when cold.
If it's on variable servicing it may stretch to 15k+ miles between each, which could lower your running costs, depends on your type of driving style and how many cold starts you do etc. I certainly get about the claimed book figures for my E220 car in terms of mpg (33 combined with lots of short journeys and town driving and it's a bigger heavier car), and servicing isn't too bad - if the car is over 3 years old most dealers offer lower rates on servicing I'm told.

For what its worth my E Class is very similar in spec, age, mileage and I've seen similar for sale on MB uk for between £19k and £24k, so that sounds dear for a C Class, even an estate with good spec - I'm guessing there's high demand & low supply right now, especially for the right spec\colour.

I asked what would be done to sort this out, and reply was "we'll do our best to get rid of them but there would of course be no re-spray". Will see tomorrow.
Also it's not my perfect choice of colour, as I would have preferred black or dark grey and then have the rear windows darkened. Also, while it has what appears to be a great spec list, there are no parking sensors which I would have expected on an estate. Dealer said they could fit them for about £550 and they would be very close to factory look....hmmm would like to see some examples of this.

:-) Thanks Va1o, that's great to see. Now looking at that spec and the new price....what would be a reasonable price for it now, considering it now has 24k miles on the clock?

I have been watching C220 prices for a while and as that is an 08 car it will not be a BE model so looks a bit expensive to me. Not certain if it has sold now but there has been a similar spec car on a forecourt in Hertfordshire for several months for a fair bit less than that. The first of the new shape cars seem to be appearing in non franchised dealers more often now and although mostly without command they seem to be priced at around 19K and not selling. A dealer in Berkshire has had a very tidy sport for nearly 6 months at 19K. The main dealers do seem to be shifting the early BE models but usually they seem to take about 2 months to sell. Have also looked at the current BM 320SE, the engine is a lot smoother than the merc produces more power has a better fuel figure and the car is in my opinion nicer to drive but is slightly smaller and everybody has one.
At the risk of hijacking the thread I have a question :-
Initially I drove a 220 BE sport estate and thought it was a bit hard and crashy so looked out for a suitable Elegance. I drove that and thought the steering was really vague and the ride was not just compliant but soggy, too far the other way from the hard sport version. How are those of you with a current 220 estate getting on with the ride ? I think the sport I tried had larger wheels so that may have been the problem. Initially I thought I wanted a car with Command but the screen now looks like an afterthought to me, I prefer the retrofit UMI which uses the normal screen without the need for the pop up one.
Like the OP it is difficult to understand why people did not spec the parking sensors although they became standard spec at some point.

From the limited reading I've done, I thought the 'blue efficiency' engines had problems.
Anyway, took the car for a 20 mile test drive, on roads I would normally use, and driving how I normally drive, to get a 'my real world' estimate of mpg....computer said 38mpg. Looking at the trip history, over 14k miles it was 37mpg. This was my only disappointment in the car. Handling was great, really easy to drive country lanes at a decent rate, and with the Sport mode on - pick up was good too, even the flappy paddles seemed quite responsive.
Dealer was good, came up with a reasonable offer for my car. If the mpg had been 43 or more, I'd have done the deal there and then. However I had to decline, and waiting to test a BMW 320D touring and an Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI. Depending on their economy and the dealer's calculations, I'll make up my mind.
Merc was nice, and a surprising drive...let's see what the other 2 are like.

I think the BE injector issues were resolved some time ago now. I guess if buying an early BE model it would be good to see some evidence it had the recall work done. Will be interested to hear what you think about the BM. The one I drove was the 180 BHP 320se Diesel which seemed a lot smoother than the MB version but had noticeably less low down torque. The SE has a softer ride the M sport is like a hard thing on a hard day. What let the BM down for me is less room in the load space and if you feel round the back of the instrument stalks or the steering wheel it has rough edges where the Merc is nicely finished even where you can’t see it.
Took a 184bhp BMW 320D out today...SE model, so a slightly softer suspension than the M-Sport version. Manual 6 speed, June 2010. Loved it, great handling with a ride as good as the C220. While I expected the MPG to be a bit better than the C220 due to the BMW being manual and the Merc being Auto, the difference was much bigger than expected. The deal was too good to turn down, so collect it on Friday and swap my X5.
Sad that I have to get rid of the X5 for financial and MPG reasons, but at this moment in time, it's the right thing for me.
