Hi

As you may remember we are looking for a sportwagon and had decided on a 2.4jtd, however looking through the classifieds these tend to command a premium of at least a couple of K over a 2.0TS, certainly around the 2001/2002 cars that I have in mind.

The car will probably do about 10 k per year when we get it, so we are not going to save a massive amount of cash on fuel so I'm wondering if we should just go and get a 2.0TS, which leads me to my next question...

2.0TS, how many miles do will they do? There are some quite high mile cars out there, when do they start to cost lots of cash?

Is the 2.0TS much worse to drive than the 2.4Jtd??

How confusing..

Twin Spark will do big miles without much worry. Cambelt, balancer belt, variator, pulleys need doing every 3 years or 36,000 miles - say £400.
8 plugs need doing at least every 5 years or 60,000 - probably more often in reality - say £120 for NGK, half that for Champions.
Oil needs to be checked regularly and a decent semisynthetic used at least.
It needs the nads revving off it to go anywhere - many new owners think there is something wrong with their car below 3000. There isn't, they just need at least that on the clock to go anywhere!

JTD is a heavy lump though, so a Twin Spark handles tidier. Against that you get 225lb ft of torque at 1,800 rpm and a much easier drive round town with no nasty light throttle shut off. It's only a single cam 10 valver, so pretty simple. Cambelt still needs doing though and it's a long job as there is NO space under the bonnet. Fan belts can delaminate and snake back into places they shouldn't.

To drive, they are completely different, and one is not better than the other. Just different. After 6 years screaming round in Twin Sparks, I now enjoy the efortless drive of the JTD. I would try and test both engines and see what you think.

I have a 2001 tspark sportwagon, haven't tried the JTD but mine is absolutely fine on 87k. Personally I was either after a really low mileage example or one that had done over 70k. As it was, mine had absolutely everything changed at the 72k service so I can sit back for a bit. Everything is fine with the car, and it has just breezed its first MOT.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the engine for quite a long time yet, or anything else about the car for that matter.

PS I hunted around and managed to find a May 2001 2.0ts velcoce in silver with red leather, 1 owner, full alfa history in excellent condition, even a new set of continental tyres!! for £5900.

So they are pretty good value now.

See, that is what I mean, I doubt I would have change from 9k if that was a jtd

Absolutely. Personally I think for the budget that I purchased mine for you can't go wrong.
If you are anywhere near Bristol you are most welcome to have a go of mine if you like.
