A few of our group have taken to going down on the Wednesday, since it's a bit quieter for the drive down and the evening qualifying sessions are a bit less crowded.
The campsites usually have plenty of people there and as others have said, by Thursday lunchtime they're beginning to fill up.
It's worth heading down a little earlier, IMO, if you can spare the time as it makes the whole weekend a lot less rushed. I did the Friday night dash one year and hated it - felt like we'd been short-changed for the whole weekend.
Wednesday is best. Get settled, watch some qualifying.
As a general rule, I tell all that ask to make sure you wake at LeMans on Friday morning.
Friday is an excellent day and hard to enjoy if it starts with a 5 hour journey.
Regarding the campsites, if you have a numbered pitch, then it is yours and should be unmolested when ever you arrive. You may have to stick up for yourself though.

Take a look at the ''Who is on which crossing'' thread and you can see earlier is generally better but it depends on work etc. Some just go for the weekend, others for a week, we always get there sometime during daylight hours on Wednesday, so that we have time to set up camp and get the shopping in. Shopping is a euphemism for BEERS and more BEERS !

We're using reserved space campsite, but also Friday morning is generally a good shopping day for beer , and bbq camping supplies before the afternoon free pit walk and Tram to Drivers Parade & party in town centreAs a general rule, I tell all that ask to make sure you wake at LeMans on Friday morning.

This year going on Wednesday for 1st time.
Been going on Thursday for last few years, so the extra day will be handy and make for less of a rush on arrival.

First year I went we left UK early AM Friday and arrived about 16:00, absolutely knackered! That's changed quite a bit now with the new road open which makes travelling a lot easier. Still, mate had a new car and would let anyone else drive, so we cleared up the beer en-route

It should be anytime, however IME it's been first come, first served. It's best to get to your campsite by Thursday lunchtime at the latest.Having an argument with someone who has allegedly "stolen" and established themselves on your allocated pitch is no fun and is best avoided.

Indeed. Although as one of our group explained to our neighbours who had allegedly been told by the marshals that they could use one of our pitches "You're welcome to leave your tent there, but I'm going to park my car in it...".
Which always sets of a good relationship with the people who are going to be your neighbours for the next few days.Ideally you wan't people who will look out for your stuff when you are not in the campsite rather than people who will piss on your tent.

By the same token you don't want neighbours who are clearly lying through their teeth and attempting to pull a fast one because their pitches weren't quite to their liking because of a large hole where someone had a bonfire, which was the root cause of their claims that "But the marshall told us to put our tents on this pitch"....Ideally you wan't people who will look out for your stuff when you are not in the campsite rather than people who will piss on your tent.
Equally you don't want people who continue to argue the toss even though we had our camping passes clearly showing which plots were ours.... Have the good grace to accept you've been busted and move.

Having braved unmarked pitches at Beausajour on a Thursday evening I would advise getting there no later than Thurs lunchtime if you dont have an allocated pitch. Its also very weather dependant due to flooding issues on some sites and the resulting squeeze on space - our airbeds have proved useful for floatation devices on a number of years (especially 2007!). You takes your choice.......
