So my trusty shed started to smell really rotten on the motorway today. Think really bad farts, very eggy.
When I got off the motorway, I noticed smoke coming from the bonnet; turned out the battery was leaking, presumably sulphuric acid??

Anyways, I got a new battery and fitted it. Ran the car for a bit to charge it up and everything was fine.

Tonight, 2 things are different.

1) The dash lights and headlights are noticeably dimmer.
2) The indicators make a different noise. As you get so used to the sound of indicators, this is verynoticeable.

Question - are all batteries the same and is it possible to buy a duff one? Would a duff battery cause the above? Its a Skoda Felicia petrol.

Ta.

Was the battery charged before use?

Did you ever figure out why the battery exploded? It sounds more like an alternator issue (providing way too many volts) than a battery problem per se.

Battery didn't explode, it was smoking when it got hot from the join in the middle.
The eggy smell had been there for weeks, I assumed it was my high protein diet, but was the sulphur leaking from the battery into the engine bay and coming through the vents.

I didn't charge the battery before use, just ran it for a few miles after fitting it.

Maybe pumping sulphur into the cabin has affected your hearing and vision?

As previously mentioned, I would check the alternator first, use a multimeter across the battery posts with the engine running. If it's above 14.5v you may be cooking the battery, and the rest of the electronics for that matter.

deffo check the alt output before you toast another battery, what car? cos some newer cars control the alt with the ECU and an overcharging alt can fry the ECU/body control modual ect.

A very common fault on the 1.3 Felicia for the voltage regulator to go. By replacing the battery you treating the symptom rather than fixing the problem,

I've seen them ruin the ECU on the Felicia, cause the radio to behave erratically and bring the airbag light on due to the alternator putting out 16 to 17 volts.

The regulator is around £25, incorporates the brushes and can be changed without removing the alternator.

Thanks for that. Just ordered a new regulator from Jorily. Looks like an easy job to fit.

It was causing the radio to stop and start!

UPDATE.

Fitted new voltage regulator. Car starts (has been standing for 5 days). Runs happily for 5 mins then dies. No electrics bar dsah lights. Won't turn over. Tick Tick sound from fusebox area when trying to turn it over.

Started it with a jump from my other car. Same thing. Starts, runs fine, die after 5 mins.

As Briskoda website is down, I thought I'd see if anyone here could suggest the next thing to check? Presumably Alternator??

What voltage was you getting with engine running? Its allways best to carry out basic fault finding tests before taking advice or changing parts.
