Alarm - whats the crack?

can anyone detail how to work the alarm for me(i.e. how long you press the button to do what), i realise this sounds abit daft. but mine doesn't seem to behave the same as in the handbook ???

My Alarm went off while driving home last night,got a few funny looks very embarrassing. Had to pull over turn the engine off then alarm. Don't quite what I did.
