My clio that i use everyday for work decided to brake down on me last night.

It started to stutter then the engine went completely. I thought oh dear ran out of petrol. Got someone to get me some (5L). Put that in and just didnt want to fire up. It turns over nicely just wont start.

Got recovered home and started with the basics. The spark plugs were bone dry. They were sparking though. So only thing it could be is fuel not getting through? Removed the fuel filter as i thought that could be clogged up due to running out of fuel. Whilst the fuel filter was off i tried turning it over again to see if any fuel would come out through the fuel lines. But no, no fuel at all coming through.

So i was thinking fuel pump has broken. But when i removed the rear bench to access the fuel pump i can hear it whine so it sounds like it is working.

Do you think its still a lack of fuel in the tank and thats why? But i did put a good 5L in surely that should be enough to get it going.

Thanks

Alex

Alex,
If you ran out of petrol, 5l should be enough for pump to pick up from.

Just cos pump runs (whines) doesn't mean its moving fuel. If the fuel system is dry at the engine, there's a good chance it's the pump.

Btw, In my opinion the concept that running out of fuel can clog up the system and filter is a myth. The fuel pump !lways picks up from bottom of tank anyway.

Thanks for the reply mate. I put another 5l in and no luck still. So I'm going to change the fuel pump today and fingers crossed that should work.

Is it a 8v or a later energy engine.

Crank sensor? I say this from experiance.

I had 2 breakdowns with mine.

Rotor and cap and crank sensor.
