Now while I'm all for paying people a decent wage, what he's just done means that all of these ships will now be registered in Liberia, where I understand that they pay their sailors in washers and buttons.

It's not going to achieve his apparent aim of getting more British sailors aboard ships but what it will do is undo all of the good work that the relaxation of the financial rules did for the UK merchant fleet.

All he's doing is trying to hurt the economy. He really is a .

Do you think he realised he would be potentially putting his MN members in a worse position when he made the complaint ?

Hopefully at some point his members will work out how divisive he is and he'll implode in a fit of pique flames

I get the impression most Unionized workers are too stupid to see just how few favours their Union leaders have done them in the last hundred years or so.

This, another case of blind faith in their 'leaders'

Not really. Most union members I've met don't give a st about the campaigning that the union does "on their behalf". All they want is their annual pay rise, which is negotiated by the union.

A hundred years ago they might have been interested in improving working conditions for themselves. Quite why Bob Crow is campaigning on behalf of Filipinos who are as far as I was aware are quite happy with the wage they receive is another matter for which I'm sure someone will raise a motion at their next congress. Or not.

What that dumb fk doesn't realise is

Most british seafarers serve on foreign flagged ships already and his union represents a tiny minority of them.

So Crow fk off you tt and stop trying to fk up my chances of a job your fat stupid piece of st

He's only doing this to piss the Tories off. There's no way that this could ever help British sailors, as ships have this unfortunate habit of moving flag nation where the regulatory regime is kinder.

He's a tt.

I assume everyone else in Europe has to follow the same rules, have their countries been ruined too?

You'd think they'd learn from what they did to the shipping industry in the 70's/80's . . . . . . . where the only office buildings that seemed to be prospering in Liverpool were the union buildings!

To put this into perspective, Panama's registry is 12 times larger than ours. And basically all of the ships registered in the UK will just go to Panama. And we lose tax money.

To put things into perspective, the number of MN ships in 1957 was 2042, and in 2008 was 180. Panama in 2009 had 8065 ships registered.

At this rate, soon even the Isle of Wight ferry will carry a flag of convenience..................

How about we (or the spineless politicians) put two fingers up to Brussels. Similarly we should also markedly reduce the amount we pay that corrupt bunch of wkers in Brussels - currently £14Bn a year.

As for Bob Crow, he is an embarrassment, an absolute tosspot of the highest order.

It's not Crow (unusually), it's the EU ruining the country.

It's a shame our 'leaders' bend over so readily, how the UK could get fined when it's a net contributor to the EU I have no idea, but our idiot leaders will I'm sure make it possible.

The article implies that the rest of Europe is already subject to these rules, so aren't we all in the same...er... boat?

I was thinking about that, unfortunately the last Labour government signed the Lisbon Treaty which apparently makes EU laws and our involvement impossible to get out of. But if we stay in the EU for the perks such as easy trade (if we weren't in the EU our exports could receive increased taxes or some other penalty) that are essential in these current times.

We however introduce a law that says something along the lines of "accepting that EU law applies except if it is not in the interests of the UK", therefore putting in place a safety net above all EU laws that prevents stupid EU laws from being applied. The EU cannot do anything about it because it would most likely contravene an EU law. And besides any EU law applied to the UK would have to pass the new UK law, if it fails it is not accepted.

Eg-1. EU law says our fishermen can't land more than x tons of fish, any more has to be thrown back dead. It fails the UK law as it penalises UK fishermen, therefore it's not applicable.

Eg-2. EU law wanting all merchant sailors to be paid the same no matter what country they are from. It fails the UK law test as it will damage or even destroy the UK Merchant Marine and jobs will be lost. Therefore it's not applicable.

What exactly would the EU do about it? I don't think they can do anything.

I like the logic. However, it involves the Government having a backbone, therefore, it will never happen. We can't even persuade the EU to accept a zero percent increase in their annual budget.
