Does it actually make that much of a difference to the cars performance? I only ever engage it on the
motorway but often wonder whether it makes a difference.

What are the best situations to use the Sport mode?

In general it holds a lower gear for longer, ie more acceleration/power due to higher revs.

The other way round would be better, sports for A and B roads, normal for duel carrageways and motorways

As post above, holds gears longer etc

Well certainly not on the motorway.

But on fast A and B road use it certainly mskes a difference and tranforms the car.

I was driving an X308 3.2 V8 today with the gearbox in sport and it does make quite a difference with it engaged.Still got my ass handed to me by a V registered Jag S Type which was following and as we both hit the NSL and both kicked down went by me like I was going backwards eek

It looked totally standard I can only assume it was a 4.0 V8 as it was too early to be a 4.2 and was definitely not an R confused

Didnt know they were that fast.

S type 4.0V8

0 - 62mph in 6.6 seconds with 281bhp and engine torque 287 lbs/ft.

XJ X308 3.2

0 - 62mph in 8.1 seconds with 240bhp and engine torque 233 lbs/ft

Still to look at them most people would think the XJ would be faster.

My next car will likely be an X350 XJR, hopefully.

The 3.2 is still a fine car mind.

To be honest you get what the XJ is best at with the 3.2V8 or the later 3.0 V6 (X350),
without resorting to the larger engines.

If you're interested more in waft and occasion then the smaller engines are fit for purpose.

Yes, the performance of my S-Type 4.2 V8 SE surprises many other cars, Jaguars XJs included! Mind you, some of the XFs put my car into its proper place!
