Hello
I recently bought a Alfa 156 1.6 which had just had it's cambelt etc replaced following a breakage. The car drives very smoothly but there is a constant whine from the right hand side of the engine bay. It sounds like an alternator whine changing with engine speed. The car does not have to be moving. The alternator belt was temporarily removed and the whine continues so it's not that. Any ideas? I had thought that a partially seized water pump may be the problem? The thermostat was replaced after the cambelt and the car heats up ok and the cooling fans come on ok.

You need to get it to a garage soon...were the idlers and tensioner replaced with the timing belt?

Could be power steering if the fluid is low. try topping it up and see if the noise goes.

Not power steering. Changed noisy water pump which has helped but still some whining. Car not worth changing any more for..................unless it was much newer. Still like it though. Had same sound from my Alfa 164

Its not the cam cover catching on the belt is it? Had that happen on my V6. Just a case of bending it back into shape.
