Any Russells own an E60 in Essex on here?
Discussion
I see one pretty much every day in my area. I'm really thinking of chopping in my 535d for an M5 but dont want to seem like a timewaster if the car isn't for me. My 535 is a lovely car and is the best (fastest) 5 series they do bar the M5, but i keep thinking i havent got the best E60 there is.
Just was wondering if theres any M5 owners who i could have a look round their car, see some of the features they come with etc etc before i get on to BMW and maybe end up wasdting their time. I'd like to experience the gearbox for myself (obviously not drive the car) and see how bad/good it is, as the 6 speed auto in my car is a little slow to react when i want to select gears manually but it is pretty smooth in its changes.
Also, if i were to buy from BMW and get the all important warranty, can i extend it year after year regardless of mileage? How much, if anyone has extended on here does it cost?
Thanks in advance guys

Im near Woodford with an E60 M5
Theres a great thread on her a bit further down that really covers the best and worst points of the car. Its worst point by far is its around town fuel consumption. Its best point is its awesome out of town performance and handling.
As for the warranty.. you obviously have to have one. Its a no brainer. You can get an extended warranty (comprehensive, named component or driveline) up to 100,000 miles.

Thanks 77. I'm in Rayleigh but my parents are in Hainault so maybe we could set something up? I want one now for certain but depends on what BMW think my 535d is worth. I owe money on it so i'm looking for them to settle up the finance and start something with them.
I'm a bit worried about 05/06 cars though which are in my budget. I suppose as long as i've got a warranty i'll be ok. Not too worried about MPG as i dont commute and it wont be as bad as my Skyline, so i'll be quids in in one way or another.
What do people on here run their cars on? Regular or super unleaded/V power? How much is servicing on a 10 cylinder car through BMW? Pads, discs etc?

VPowers fine.. but to be honest any of the higher octane super unleaded stuff will do. (it gets through so much)
I work in Redbridge so Hainaults fine.. (there used to be a skyline owner in Elmbridge Rd .. not you?)
I wouldnt fret about the 05-06 cars .. they should all have had any work done on them by now. (and anyway you get a years AUC warranty which should catch anything.. and if it doesnt your extended warranty will)
The clutch is potentially a problem (expense wise). It all depends on how its been driven..
The only other thing to remember is to have a stash of oil for it as it has an accepted consumption (buy it from OPIE oils or somewhere.. not BMW)
Tyres 285/35/19 rear and 255/40/19 front. They come with CONTIs as standard but most swear by PS2s
.. at the end of the day this is what its all about ..

Thanks again fellas.
77. You may have seen my car when i was visiting my parents. A silver Skyline GTR with black wheels on Elmbridge rd! More likely to see a carbon black E60 now days though. Them photos are wicked too! love the shot at the ring. If you've ever got time to show me your car and let me ask you a million and one questions, it'd be much appreciated mate. You just say when.
@Ecain63. Thanks for that mate. I'm sure you used to own an RS6? I actually wanted one of them before the 60 but I was worried about owning such a car without a warranty. Not too sure if Audi would sell you one without purchasing from them but it put me off enough to go for the 535d.
So roughly how much would the servicing be? I'm not too sure on the M5's service intervals or if they have minor and major services at given times. How about cam belts, or are they chains? What about the clutches. How long is the average life of one? I'd also like to get the extended warranty which covers for any eventuality. Anyone done this? How much did you have to lay out for it, and how fickle can they be? Last thing i want is them refusing to honour a claim because of any silly technicalities
Sorry if i'm going on, but it would help rather than asking the stealers
Cheers

Yeah my last car was a C5 RS6 Avant. No word of a lie, the best car ive owned so far. To be honest i was one of the lucky ones and through good maintenance the original gearbox is lasting beyond 100k with its new owner. Many other owners i know went through a box every 20k. The thing with the C5 box was that it didnt matter whether you were caning it all the time, kept it standard or mapped it to 510bhp / 550lbft and doing 1/4 miles, or just driving like a granny (like me), if it decided it wanted to chew up the Torque Converter then there was nothing you could do about it. No rhyme or reason. But £7k none the less. Audi Warranty was the only way to go.
As for the M5. Servicing is done on a 'when needed' basis. Your driving style will dictate how often it needs servicing and what needs doing. Some things are fixed, ie. oil changes and inspections but the rest is pretty much down to abuse levels.
Costs will depend on your dealer. My experience so far is (and some of this is previous owner):
Pads will last circa 19k according to the idrive. Circa £150 to £200 to change.
Discs average 40k i beleive. I did my fronts recently and they cost me £470 + fitting through bmminiparts.com. BMW wanted £600 for the discs + fitting.
Brake fluid needs doing on mine in march and thats about £250 i think.
Oil changes are £250 - £350 dealer dependant.
My last big service was covered by previous owner. It included plugs, SMG service, Oil etc and that was over £1500.
The V10's are chain driven but i dont know the life expectancy. Someone here will tell you.
Clutches are another big expense. Im researching the cost at the mo and ive found that it only takes 4.5hrs labour to do the clutch according to the 'good book'. Thats approx £350 at an indy or £600 at BMW. Then there are the parts. Ive done a price enquiry but im reliably informed that the parts are the big cost with a clutch change. I'll update when ive got a reply to my price enquiry. As far as im aware the parts needed are; Twin Mass Flywheel, Clutch Pack and Release Bearing. I may be corrected on this so keep looking here for an update. p.s. My E61 M5 Tourer is on 43k and drives like new, im not having any clutch issues. Just curious as to costs.
The rest is a mystery to me as im not there yet. The above may not be 100% correct but its the best i can do from experience and it wont be far out.
Warranty is approx £89 a month fully comp with no excess.
Eddie
Thanks for the reply Ecain. Just the sort of info i was looking for!
That was the deciding factor for me on the RS6. I heard a few horror stories about the gearbox, especially on mapped ones (which as you explained didnt matter what was done to it or how it was driven) and the faulty EDC, which again most people went for a conventional set up. A warranty was the only way to go but i didnt look into it that far. At the time i was looking my budget only got me 80k+ milers and it put me off a tad. One day maybe eh!
Regarding the M5, none of the costs sound unreasonable to me apart from the clutch, which i'm sure would be classed as a consumable?, and the major servicing.
Another Q if you dont mind. I assume you have a BMW warranty with your 61, but wouldn't going to an independant invalidate your warranty? I've heard of dealers getting funny about getting work done by an independant, even consumables like discs and pads etc. If say for instance i want to buy genuine BMW pads and have an indy fit them, could they be funny when honouring a warranty claim if they find out someone else has worked on it? I'd assume they would know as they'd ask for your reg/vin no when buying parts for the car.
Sorry to pick your brain mate but i'd rather do it here rather than get the brush off from a dealer. I only want to speak to them if and when i'm ready to buy.
Cheers

The warranty conditions are: car must either be still in 3 year manufacturer warranty, or be currently covered by extended warranty. If its neither of these then it needs to have less than 60k miles on the clock and have a full BMWSH / BMW approved service history.
I get my service work done at the main dealers, that way you get the all important BMW stamp in the book. So long as other work is done by a BMW approved workshop then using your favorite independant won't upset the warranty. The only restriction is that they are properly approved and they only fit genuine OEM parts.
Yes mine is a BMW warranty and its very clear cut and covers everything other than wear and tear. Simply take the car in to BMW, sign the form, pick it up when the repair is done and pay no money. I've just had my tailgate wiring replaced under warranty, all very straight forward.

@Rich1231. Only 5 minutes up the road from me. I'd love to come meet up with you and chat about your particular experiences on your time with the car. Also your local enough so i can find out about work you've had done and who does it etc etc. It would be a great help, just as the rest of the people have been on this site.
If you can do anything for me, it'd be much appreciated mate.
So, £2600 for a clutch? Now that is steep. It'd be good to find out how long the life is on a clutch for one of these. Be nice to find a car thats only just had one fitted though!!
I cant imagine BM doing much business with the M5/6's at the moment. Maybe that'd be in my favour when the time comes to strike a deal. I'm thinking new pads, fluid changes etc etc to be done to do a deal.
I remember a couple years ago when BMW were doing a promotion on all AUC's which was 2 years warranty. I'd love that to come round again!
If i'm honest guys, if i had bought a higher specced 535d i would have it mapped and be done with it as for a diesel its got great performance. I just feel i dont own the best 5 series out there for one, and i dont have paddle shift, rear heated seats, logic 7 or fold in mirrors.
It'd mean parting with my Skyline GTR though, which would break my heart

These figures are expensive, but then servicing/repair costs at all main dealers (whatever the marque) are always much more expensive than at indies. Maybe the answer is to get a warranty from someone other than BMW.
And who would you suggest? I'd only consider BMW to warranty my M5. Its so easy and you don't have to pay out yourself and then wait weeks for a cheque. I had a Warranty Direct policy on my RS6 and even when they paid out it was a properly labourious process. And also the BMW warranty is excellent value @ £89 a month. BMW warranty is excellent, its bombproof and its easy.
If I had my time again with the Audi I'd definately gone for an Audi warranty but at £2500 a year they were just too pricey to justify the benefits. .
Clutch life depends on your shift modes, driving style, town or motorway, and launches. The early SMG's (ie M3's) were only allowed 3 launches before warranty was voided, the early M5 SMG was allowed 7 and the later ones are now allowed 15 or so. I asked my dealer this today.
I'd say you can expect anywhere from 30 to 50k on a clutch with mixed use but they have gone as early as 5k and I believe stormsters lasted 90k or so even with the hard use he gave it. Maybe its luck?

£2500 for the Audi warranty??? Jesus thats steep! I'd be getting a car with an extendable warranty and at 89p/m i think its not bad value considering.
About the launching lark. Is there some sort of process you have to do to launch the car? Engage some gear and take off the traction control, that sort of thing? I think its stupid if they give you a special way to do it then say you can only do it so many times. You couldn't give a kid a bag of fruit salads then tell him if he eats more than 10 he has to pay for his own fillings!
That said, i could tell people my car is a 5.0 V10!
