Guys - I have just refilled the engine with Valvoline and have tried priming it using a priming tool and drill. I set up an oil pressure gauge to check the pressure whilst priming and the gauge isn't moving whilst the engine is being primed. I also set up a warning light whilch doesn't go out either so I'm assuming I have no oil pressure. The engine was left without oil after it was drained for a good few weeks and the sump was off for a new gasket.

I'm going to replace the sender and switch and I'm wondering if I should change the pressure relief valve and spring. Any ideas?

Sounds like your pump is dry,use an oilcan and squirt some into the outlet side or down the oil pressure warning light hole, screw it back in and try again.smile

You may have to take off the pump cover and pack it with vaseline if you can't get it to prime.

The pickup from the sump can play up. If not touched it could be fine, and if getting a bit of oil in the pump and priming like you described doesn`t work, I think it is worth to have a look at that.

Daft question... you are spinning the oil pump the right way, aren't you?

Andy

Have you a copy of the bible. There is a simple way to prime the pump in that (By Adam)
Try that it's so simple it works.

Of course - the pump the should be primed in the direction of the dizzy. I'm going to fill the pump using Adam's technique as well as changing the sender & switch for good measure. Will finish off using the drill to get everything lubed...

I ordered a new switch and sender plus a relief spring. The guy at rimmers didn't know very much when asked about checking the state of the pressure relief valve. If the parts arrive tomorrow I'll have another go.

An update for you all. Dropped a new pressure sender in from Rimmers and span the dizzy drive clockwise using a drill and priming tool - after a moment the pressure on the gauge moved up the gauge to peak at 50 psi. Waited 10 minutes and span it again same result 50 psi - dropped the dizzy in to continue the rebuild - water next before firing it up by the weekend.

Will post pics of refurbed engine bay once I'm happy all's well....

Sounds good - the oil pressure releif valve should be kicking in around 50 psi or so, so it shouldn't go any higher.
