just took my 4.6 for its first long run to go and collect a caravan. i have heard you could get 17.5 mpg according to the computer but i was amazed when it got to 22.8mpg average then when i picked up the caravan and waited a while for it to settle it only went down to 22.2 mpg average on the return journey. just thought i would share this.

It sounds to me that your computer is telling you porkie pies, and quite large ones at that.

I have never seen better then 17.1 on my P38 Vogue, but normally a lot less then that.

And mine has a nasty habit of telling me i am doing 17 it tells me the range i have left in the tank , and just suposing it tells me i have 300 miles range and i do another 20 miles it tells me my range is now 260.

But dont you just luv them.

I tend to agree with Piersie.

When running on petrol, I can get as high as an indicated 18.3.

When running on gas, I get higher readings - 20.1-21.6 - but suspect they are not worth the electronic version of "the paper it is printed on"

Later 4.6s aren't too bad. Just got out of mine after 50 motorway miles in mine and managed 22.8.

Went from Marlow to Scotland in December, driving like Miss Daisy got 23.5
Anything other than constant speed however and its a very different story

On our first M Reg 4.6 HSE it'd do just under 22mpg on a steady long distance run. Around town or more heavy right footed driving would be a lot lower though.

One of the benefits of Range Rover Renowned Reliabilty comes when selling the thing.

"The MPG gauges all do that Sir, they often read half what they should do, common fault with those modern electronics sir"

i was driving like miss daisy and basically didnt go much over 2200 revs and sat at 56 mph most of the time, the roads were quite clear being sunday morning. i was on lpg and did 290 miles on £65.00 of lpg since being home the average is dropping but you would expect that. well pleased though as they are nice motors.

I have managed 396 miles between fillups, but the magic 400 miles still escapes me.

Funny thing - it has been much better since the aircon packed up...

I get a steady 15 (US) MPG from mine with a mix of freeway and town driving. Never seen higher than 16.5.

Is this the time to mention that my 4.4 TDV8 often does 33mpg on my trip to work?

I guess the £35k premium makes up for a lot of mpg though hehe

At current fuel prices it's probably only a few hundred thousand miles to get to break even!
