Mrs Puggit and I are considering a city-break to Amman, in Jordan.

Apart from a long and exhausting day-trip to Petra, does anyone have any advice?!

Aren't they going through the same stuff as Egypt (and others) right now?

Just enjoy, amazing place
Jerash to the north is class, as are the desert castles like Kerak.
Wadi Rum is .... out there....

We were considering Cairo until last week wink

Jordan is the opposite of Tunisia/Egypt - it's well run and poverty is very rare.

I have been many (10?)times and took the family (wife+3) for a week a few years ago. Amman wouldn't keep you busy for too long - it's a bit boring to be honest although if you have never been to that part of the world before then the novelty might detain you longer than it did us. Petra is one of the few places I have been to that lived up to my expectations and is a must of you're going to Jordan. Stay locally and start early. We loved Wadi Rum where we stayed in the desert in a sort of camping hotel. We also stayed on the Dead Sea for 2 nights although we wished it was longer. Forget Aqaba.

Also consider Syria - took the family there as well. Cheap as chips and Palmeira in particular is amazing.

I spent a week in Amman, visiting a friend who was working in Jordan. Wouldn't hurry back. Not much nightlife. Everything seemed to shut pretty early, poor food, crap service, average hotels. We drove a rental car down to the Dead Sea - a million police checkpoints which was tiresome although the police guys were all very friendly. Marriott on the dead sea unspectacular, poor service and very ordinary room.

He lives in Beirut now which is crazy but oh so much livelier!
