Hello all.

The father in law is looking to buy a car for use when he goes to his house in Crete. After spending £300 a trip on hiring from Hertz etc. he has decided to take the plunge and buy one outright. He will be spending 6 months of the year out there from now on so it needs to happen soonish or else he'll be shafted by the hire companies.

Normally i'd say, 'just buy one down there', but its not quite that simple.

If you thought that we paid a lot in insurance premiums here you'd have a fit down there. Anything bigger than a 1.4 litre engine and you might aswell hand over your wallet. MOT's are only once every 3 years but the roads are so bad that you need a good budget for suspension repairs. Westover Peugeot are offering 3 years free insurance on some models and they said they might honour it abroad depending on what we buy.

The biggest thing though is the cost of cars. The prices are very over inflated. Second hand cars are not much different to the cost of new cars here.

So my question is, has anyone bought a car over here and had it delivered to a foreign address? I spoke to Westover Peugeot this morning and they say they can deliver a RHD car to Crete but not a LHD and they werent sure of the tax / shipping implications. Has anyone any experience of this type of thing?

Cheers,

Eddie
