I’m signed up for a first session of deep tissue massage on Wednesday, to help improve the current lack of mobility in my hips, which is causing me problems with my karate.

My sister, who is a qualified physiotherapist has said that this should make a positive difference, although genetically our family does not have particular supple joints and hence I’m unlikely to be doing head-high roundhouse kicks in the near future…!!

I’ve heard a few people say that this can be extremely painful, both during and after the treatment, so I was hoping for some info from practitioners (if any) and participants on PH.
I do know that you are meant to drink lots of water after the treatment, which is no problem!
Cheers

I had it done on my neck; seriously painful but it cured my tightness.

I was sore for a good day after, and the sleep was not great.

You will need a few sessions to really sort out knots etc.

Very painful. You may even begin to wish you never had it done, but the benefits are worth it!

I had a lot done on my calfs and quads. The therapist will get his/her fingers right into the muscle. It doesn't hurt in a bad way IYSWIM but you may give out the odd yelp or whimper.

It certainly loosens your muscles and you will enjoy the after effects. However, I'm bot sure how it is going to help your hip mobility for Karate. If it does, report back and let me know.

It is very painful at the time, but the feeling of relaxation afterwards is immense.

Suggest you don't have much to eat drink/beforehand.

You will invent new swear words and end up laughing to cover the urge to scream while it is being done but the after effects make it worth the pain.

Well, the general response appears to be a big thumbs up for the effects of the treatment, so as long as I can 'man up' during the process, then well worth doing....

Thanks!

If you're not used to it it can be quite painful but IF the person you are going to is good it will make a big difference. Don't expect whatever problem you have to be solved in one visit though.....massage and lots of stretching is what you will need. The other thing that works brilliantly (at least for me) is acupunture for tight muscles....they basically needle the tight spot/knot which release it. It can be very sore afterwards but it works bloody well.

The person I'm going to is highly recommended by my karate teacher, and I accept that it is likely that I will need a number of repeat sessions!

I will report back on Wednesday!!

Well, that was an interesting experience....

The guy clearly knew what we was doing and following a 15-20 minute detailed consultation I had a further 1 1 1/4 hours of massage, a basic full body overhaul.

Generally it was a fairly intense experience (i.e. not your usual relaxing hotel massage), but only a few occassions where I was forced to breathe very deeply when the pain was at its worst - mainly on my feet (I have plantar faciitis), calves and to a lesser extent on my thighs.

The massage finshed with my neck, whcih now seems about an inch taller and half a stone lighter for some reason. I'm not feeling too sore today either!

I have a follow up appointment booked for next Friday, where the focus will be much more on my pelvis, to see whether that can be loosened up.

I had this a few years ago when I tore my teres major muscles. As others have said, you will invent new swear words and it can (and often does make your eyes weep). Strangely enough, after a very short time you might even begin to enjoy the sessions ...

One very strong suggestion I have is this: HAVE A PEE BEFORE YOU GO FOR YOUR SESSION. There are few things worse than suffering pain whilst you are desperately trying to stop yourself peeing.

yes

hehe

Spot on.

It's a weird kind of pleasurable pain, and I used to feel a bit drunk after a decent session.
