G50 dimensions
Discussion
I was after the dimensions from the front face of the engine to the drive output on the G50 gearbox.
We are looking at fitting a sequential box from Elite Transmissions into our Ultima and my concern is that the transaxle output drive, when coupled with an aftermarket bellhousing, will be too far away from the engine, and we will have to get custom driveshafts made, which is something we do not want to do.
Has anyone got a drawing of a G50 as this should give us the information I need? Obviously I have to add in the adaptor plate thickness as this will push the engine further back in the chassis too. I am wondering if there is anything else I haven't considered but I think that is the main concern!
Thanks

Hi Johnathan
What engine are you looking to put it behind? If it's a Chevy then I have already looked into this with the Elite TXL300 and it was a no go for the reasons you have mentioned with regards driveshaft outputs and it was also going to hit the chassis above the transaxle. They have been used with the Audi V8, but that's a much shorter engine.

The TXL300 moves the diff centre line to far back and the long awaited TXL700 7 Speed moves the diff so far up the drive shaft would be 6" above the wheel centre line. The TXL700 is realy only a Race car box, and they didn't think the TXL300 was strong enough for a 600lbs Chevy motor...
There will be a New gearbox in the USA but prob not till early 2012, designed for America V8 power. I cant say anything at present but it sounds like the perfect answer to mid-engined V8 Power....

I presume it for a full track car? i dont think you want to use one on the road....
Speak to Rob at Elite as there is another box in their range that will fit but currently has not been done, it drops the driveshaft flanges down very low and would require the diagonal chassis tube reversing where the drive shafts pass through to the uprights.
You would need to sort a flywheel and adaptor but thats all possible.

I don't know if anyone has looked into it but you will more than likely find a Hewland box that will fit, handle the power and fit all your other requirements.
The one in the Hewland range that I am aware of, that is designed to take high levels of torque, is the FGC, which is a transaxle and I have used it in two single-seaters that I have owned. It is a dog-box, however, and with high levels of torque and power, it must be used carefully as the dogs are prone to damage, in my experience anyway (maybe I didn't use the box carefully enough
)The dog-rings normally have 8 dogs and we had some success by grinding off 4 of them to make gear engagement easier. Also we undercut the faces of the dogs a little to prevent jumping out of gear.
