Hello All

I put this in the USA section but it looks a tad under used.

My wife and I are driving down Route 66 at the end of April, has anyone got any hints, tips or recommendations?

Thanks in advance
Aidan

Erm, no offense, but do something more interesting?

Route 66 doesn't really exist, and the bits that do are meant to be mostly neglected, and the interstate that replaced it is meant to be a god awful dull bit of road surpassing many other god awful bits of dull interstate. You really don't see much of the US from an interstate. Think Cars and Radiator Springs vs the interstate.

I've wanted to drive R66 and even my US friends have warned me against it.

if you want more interesting roads, fly to LA and do the coast road to SanFran and then up to Seattle/Vancouver, or fly to Denver and go cross country over the Rockies to Las Vegas, or personally, fly to Charlotte in the east and spend a week in the Appellations and find places like Deals Gap and so forth.

Thanks, I'll take your advice into consideration. But as we've already booked it, it's not really the kind of advice I was after.

I've met plenty of people who have run route 66 and had a ball, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I would say do your research before you go - there are many good books and websites - apparently it is easy to get pushed onto the interstates, but some of them are easily circumnavigated and some interstates are better (more interesting, or useful at avoiding certain bits) than others. If you know where you want to go, then it should be a good 'un. Don't leave it to chance though, and plan in plenty of straying from the beaten track.

Personally, I would say that although things can always be bettered (esp by the got the T shirt list tickers) a road trip across the states is always going to provide good entertainment.

Advice? Avoid Jack in the Box and Quiznos do ice tea that they will put in the microwave for 2 mins and slosh 1% milk in if you ask nicely.

(I'm just a bit jealous, you lucky barsteward...)

I think you should drop in at Disney World in Florida then drive to Washington and see the White house. Form there go north to NYC and off to Boston. Go to a baseball game in Fenway park. Don't book tickets they are easy and I would expect the locals to give you a box when they hear your accent anyway. This should cover the first day.

Day 2 drive from Boston to Niagra falls and rent a barrel. Throw yourself off in the barrel but make sure your wife has a good vantage point for photos. Niagra Falls to Pennsylvania is just a short hop and you may make it in your barrel. here you will get to see the Pennsylvania Dutch (they are actually German). Poke a couple of locals and set up camp for the night.

PA to Louisiana today for day 3 to get some Craw fishing in....................

OK go on, where are you going and how long for!?! Also, what do you want to see? America is this kind of large place so a little more info may help. Saying you are "doing route 66" is like saying "I'm doing Europe what should I see".

For info Route 66 can only really be considered to exist west of Chicago. East and there isn't really one. Also "Routes" are not roads! They are routes, they use the road network to get from one place to another. If you follow RTE 110 to Salem you will find that you go on many different roads.

You're not helping my currently itchy feet.

Short bit o' nerding on Horizons Unlimited gave this, http://www.hhjm.com/66/index.htm

Should kill a few hours.

(and if you do like your tea, take a box of PG, Lipton yellow just doesn't cut it!)
